I have my car now for almost a year, when I bought it there was an HKS induction kit installed (green mushroom). When I did my first off road drive, the car had sucked some water and the engine stalled, I stopped immidiately and cleaned the filter and let the tubes dry but on some way, the MAF sensor was damaged and the car spitted flames and wouldn't drive normal.
In the garage, they removed the filter and gave me a new MAF sensor in garantuee, but now I'm considering to us the HKS again (for the sound effects) I made a plastic cover around the mushroom to protect it from water splashses but has anyone soma advice for me because I don't want to ruin my MAF sensor and maybe my engine.
I see in car magazines lots of tweaked scoobys and other cars with such a mushroom filter, how is it possible that they don't have the trouble that I have ????????????

Some people box them in with a cold air inlet pipe somewhere on the grille. I never had any probs when I had the HKS SPF fitted.

We dont do off road;)
Seriously though, the only way of preventing the filter getting soaked is to make a shroud for it, this will not only help prevent water getting near it, it will also stop the engine sucking in hot air from the engine...
Two birds with one shroud;)

I must put mu question in another way, is there anybody of you that has ruined the Maf sensor or worser things with an aftermarket air filter, I just keep in mind that the original filter housing is very complex = so it must have a reason to made it that way i think...

Wally,

IMHO it depends on the YM of the car. The newer MAF is a bit girlie as I`ve heard of loads of them packing in, where as the early YM used a solid wire in the sensor which appears to be a bit more substantial.
