what are the benefits of reversing the scoop for impreza's with fmic? As I have seen quite a few jap/aus cars with either the scoop remove, or the scoop reversed.

I just blocked mine to avoid it looking silly.

Yet i have read and heard of strong reasons for NOT blocking or REVERSING.

I personally think that reversing looks fecking stupid:D

Piccie - excuse the spray painting.. I left a "vent" for the turbo  Probably makes no difference I just did as Andy F and APS recommended.

Wierd that, i know we have discussed it before John, but i am sure Jamie spoke with APS and they said DO NOT block the scoop.

I am sure Harvey also did tests with it blocked, and IIRC temperatures rose under the bonnet. Maybe wrong.

Mine is still open, as i just cant be bothered to even test anything.

Sure Bob Rawles, Trouts, R19KET, TIM W, David Wallis, Harvey, are all left open and facing forward;)

I dont know Christian, maybe tests in THEIR climates may be opposite to Harveys test:confused:

Seems silly way to waste your carbon scoop though. I will have it (free;)) when you get your reversed one:D

Did some investigating into this for a rally team and came up with nothing but reasons not to reverse it. Not much of a problem on a road car but we got a lot of problems with dirty windscreens (Dirty water going through grill, over engine, out of scoop and onto screen) Also the major reason is cooling, with it reversed all the air that comes through your rad and FMIC exits the scoop, instead of the airflow from your scoop directing existing airflow down the back of the engine (via your turbo and downpipe) and off down the tunnel further helping keep your exhaust cool. Don't know if you run an oil cooler but putting it where your TMIC was is also a good idea.

Aside from the possibility of better aerodynamics ( however small it may be ) I can only think it would be beneficial to reverse it.
All the air that goes through the rad/FMIC has to escape somewhere. Normally this would be under the car. Ideally you want as much air as possible travelling over the car, and not under, i guess also for aerodynamic reasons ( hence fron splitters etc to reduce any airflow passing uncerneath ) With such an opening on top of the bonnet, it should allow more air to pass through the cooling system which can only be a good thing, as it should help everything run cooler.
Most people would i think leave the scoop as it is, as any benefits probably would be small, and certainly, IMO a reversed scoop would look crap.

So why do people in other countries do it?

I can only think of that hot air would be able to escape with the scoop reversed? and also for high speed, as the reversed scoop would give "better" aerodynamics...

I have removed the under tray from the scoop as well - perhaps I should put it back on? I was also thinking of doing something similar to what you have done John.

Also, John, where is your strut brace??
