So far I have narrowed my options down to the following:

Fuji 2800 - Looking like the favourite. Its £278 inc everything from internetcamerasdirect
Or the Canon IXUS V2 – Currently half price @ Argos. Normally £399.99, Currently £199.99.

Which ever camera I get I’ll probably end up getting it from Jessops and do a price match as they are about 10 minutes walk from my desk at work : )

Does any one have any views on either of these cameras? I have just looked back through about 6 months of posts on Scoobynet and there are loads of similar posts and post seem to go towards either, the Fuji 2800, the Canon IXUS or one from the Sony range (which I want to avoid due to the memory card compatibility).

Cheers
Darren

Try the Nikon coolpix. Well rated camera at that price (£280 ish)

I found this a very, very useful site when buying a digital camera.
Ended up with a Nikon Coolpix.

I had the same dilemma last June - digicam for under £300. In the end chose the Nikon Coolpix 775. Should be about £250 in the shops now...

I have the Fuji and it is superb. Great quality pics, able to take movies with sound, and a huge 6x Optical zoom - which takes some beating compared to the other makes at the same price ;).

My finacee's dad has a top of the range Minolta digi cam (Dimage 7hi - 1k new  ) and was hugely impressed by the 2800, especially when I told him the price!

It does eat batteries though so get some 1700(min) nimh rechargables. And you'll also want a bigger Smartmedia card, 32 or 64MB is good enough for normal pictures, can store a fair bit.

The screen is good, even using the normal viewfinder is good as its LCD too, which means you see EXACTLY what the lense is seeing - it can be a bit dark but TBH I've never had a prob with it.

If you get one you won't regret it - there quite a few others on here with it too that rate it very highly!

No probs :D Tis a good camera - and also looks and feels more like a proper camera, which is just what I wanted coz I'm forever putting my fingers in the way of these other tiny digi cameras  All in all a great package and high rated too by the reviewers.

Heres a few pics (taken in 1m Megapixel, normal mode - goes then to 1m fine, then 2m normal and 2m fine) which is about average quality for the camera, but they've also been reduced in size for scoobynet ;)

Darlodge,

I've just purchased a Sony cybershot DSC-P71, 3.2 mega pixels. It has excellent features and the build quality is great as expected from Sony. It also takes the same memory stick as my sony digital Camcorder, so now I have 8mb, 16mb and 128mb memory sticks.

It was on sales at the Sony Centre, reduced to £249

I can second or third ;) the Finepix2800, bought mine last year and am more than happy with it. Great camera for the price.

Or here - http://www.exiges.com/gallery/skyline/elvington060402/ - for a selection of pics taken with it.

I use NiMH batteries, cheap enough for a few sets, and Smart Media is cheap as chips at www.7dayshop.com

A bargain.

If you want something a little less bulky than the Fuji 2800, how about the 4 mega-pixel Kodak LS443 with docking station for £299 at Amazon?

Professional quality lens, outdoor LCD, 3x optical zoom and 3.3x digital zoom. Picture sizes up to 2448 x 1632.
