My mothers PC is running slow as sh!t so I am trying to tidy things up for her.

I am at the defrag stage however I am getting no further than 10% complete then it indicates a change in the drive and starts again:confused:

Had a similar prob with my PC once and just gave up and got a copy of Norton which dealt with it with no probs.

Is there something I can do to get the std windows defrag to work ?

try running defrag in native DOS

hit F8 at start up to get the menu, then select command prompt only

try running defrag from there

Run check disk first and antivirus may be some problems to fix there first. Though if your mums PC has been defragged for a while my old 98 pc took 10 hours (only 10 gig) while my 120 gig took only 30 minutes

Yes - run it in DOS - this will be by far the easiest and you won't have tbe restart problems. The defrag in Windows is detecting a change in the hard disk. In Windows you will have all the system processes messing with the hard disk, as well as tools such as anti-virus that are constantly logging changes to the hard disk and keeping track of themselves. Defrag detects these changes and restarts. That's a new thing for the system processes so they do some fiddling, and that's more changes and then another restart! If you are insistent in running in Windows, then make sure you close down all the apps running on your system tray (by the clock) such as the anti-virus tools and any other monitoring SW.

Also disable any screen savers as this is the most common problem.
PS. Don't sit and wait for it to finish, did my laptop and it took 6+ hours.

Download a prog called EndItAll...(search in google for it).

Run it and it will stop all programs than those that are absolutely necessary for Windows to work..then run defrag.
