Any sti7 owners having trouble changing down to 2nd from cold.Is
there an oil change that will cure this,and will subaru do this for free?

Squizz had problems similar in his MY99... basically the dealer should change the box oil under warrenty.. They had to use a better quality old to solve his problem and it's fine now...

Mines always been a bit grumpy when cold, how many miles u got ?

Mines done about 8000 miles,on very cold mornings you almost
have to use two hands to force it in to second from third until
it warms up.

Hmm sounds a bit too tight, its a warranty jobby, get your dealer to take a look. :)

Mine was bad.

Delaer changed the oil and it was better.

1sst and 2nd still a pig when cold.

Both me and my sti7 are grumpy in the morning:):):). I don't think it's that bad, just sometimes requires a little extra push. (said the Vicar to the Matron :):):) )

My pair of STi's are also the same until warm, both about 9K miles. My 01 WRX was the same until warm also.

I've just got used to it.

Mine's booked in to have a gear oil change at subaru dealers on saturday.They said they had not heard of this problem before(stange?).Trouble is they will probably change the old standard oil that is too thick when cold for some new standard oil that is.......not that I dont have much faith in main dealers.

exactly the same when cold, even tho car is garaged over night.
drive an evo from cold and then just think yourself you've got a scoob and kinda get used to it....

Got the dealer to change the gearbox oil (after a protest from them - tw4ts) at the 10k service.

Its a lot better but still not perfect. I suppose its the v.1 of the 6 speed box. Perhaps the next Service Pack (STi 8 ?) will fix it :) :)

i live in italy, some morning is very cold ( -3 °C),
change from 2° is very very hard. i push the cluch (sorry my bad english) rev up 4000/4500rmp, then i can change gear. but oil temp is very low and rev up is not a good idea. but work

I have to double-de-clutch when cold otherwise it's impossible. I have come to accept it as the gearbox works hard and needs a highly viscous oil for those higher temps.

I also have had trouble especially 3rd to 2nd change when cold. Car gets serviced tomorrow - I've already mentioned that it's a problem.

I have this too. When the box is cold selcting 1st and 2nd can be tough but once it's up to temp, it's fine. I don't think the standard oil is very good as even when it's up to temp the "feel" from the box is not very good.

Once a few more miles have been put on my box (I'm on just about 4000 miles ATM), I will put some decent gearbox oil in. I have bought some Redline High Shock Gear Oil (or something like that) to go in. I tried a friend's previous Scoob with the standard Gearbox oil, Silkolene and the Redline and each was an order of magnitude better than the last!! The Redline whilst providing good protection, is super smooth and gearchanges are silky :D

Hopefully, that'll cure the problem.

I had this problem from new (there were a few cold mornings in march when I first collected the car).

Explained it to the dealer, and he said the next time I was down, he would change the gearbox oil for a different oil (supplied by Subaru - came in Shell container, but I never saw the name/spec), which specifically helped gearboxes which were "tight". I called him on a Sunday morning to say I was in the area, and even though the workshops weren't officially open, he opened them up for me, and got a a technician in to do the job for me - now that's what I call service!!

Instantly noticed a difference, and although stiff to get into 2nd from 3rd on a cold start, it was possible without double de-clutching etc. Another benefit was that the overall quality of the gearshift also improved.

He explained that the gearboxes do get better with a few miles under them, pretty much like the engines are tight for the first few thousand miles, and by the time I had done 10 - 12k miles, things would have loosened up nicely, which they have.

At the 10k service (in November), he checked the gearbox oil level (just below the maximum), and asked how the gearshift quality was. I said it was much improved over what it was before, but it was still sometimes a bit stiff for 2nd on cold mornings. They added a bit more oil (it's fractionally over the maximum mark), and it's been fine ever since, with an even better gearshift.

Had also a problem when shifting from 1 to 2, change the oil with synthetic one from castrol, now it's ok, but found some pieces in the box, probably from my moderate driving style...
