Can anyone recommend a good MP3 unit that doesnt cost a fortune. Are these a better option than the standard CD player. I am around the Notts area

There are lots of good mp3 players now for the car. I can recommend the Sony CDXMP30 from MCS.
Easy to fit and loads better then a conventional single slot cd player as holds more music on single cd. They also do a multi changer for it

just drop in to car electronics on castle boulevard - they're doing the alpine 7893 for 250 - you'll never go wrong with that.

I bought the Kenwood not so long ago, tis the best head unit I've had in a while. You can get about 7-8 albums (at a decent bit rate of 192kbps) on one CD so you don't have to bother with the multi-change unit and wiring it up etc!

I've been downloading quite a few MP3 albums from Kaza, I've converted to wav and played them in the car CD player, to be totaly honest the quality and sound levels seem to vary and are not as good as CD's, any views on this? am I loosing some quality during the converstion process. MP3>WAV

I've been very happy with the stuff I've got. I make sure the bitrate is 128kb/s or higher (usually 192) and they sound sweet on the DVD/mp3 player I've got. To be fair, the bass is usually slightly strong, and the high frequencies aren't quite as clear, but you really have to have a good system to notice it.

(Serves me right for having a £3k+ system in my car really :D)

By the way, my in-car DVD/CD/mp3 player and screen are for sale...... ;)

Mr Cyberevo - I would stick to files of at least 192 or above if you are burning them onto cd as an audio cd rather than a data cd, as you'll still get the same time length regardless of the original file size. Of course if its a data (mp3) cd you'll get less on it. 192 is pretty close to cd quality, but it depends on the original recording quality in the first place.

As far as sound levels goes, i use mp3gain, which rectifies the differences in volume and cleans up tracks. It's freeware so you should be able to find it using a browser fairly easily.

The sound will varie alot when you convert MP3 back to WAV, it all depends what sort of quality the MP3 was encoded in. to get a decent sound when converting to WAV the MP3 should be 128kbps or higher.

The software used also has a lot to do with conversion quality because there are a loooooooad of different conversion engines about.
