After a long and protracted study of this whole science of TV's my advice is DON'T Touch rear projection. Its old tech and as said earlier it has limited lifespan, crazy. Panasonic do a 36 inch job for 2Kish, if its not big enough then tough wait a year to 18 months and get a flat panel biggie(currently 7-8K).

The plasma screen [flat panel] tv's are the ones with limited lifespan.
Tube life of approx 2000 hours before you need to change it. Guess what the most expensive component of these 6-10k tv's is!

It has double the amount of pixels [?] horizontal and vertical to give an even sharper picture than the older lcd tele's.
We shall see ....

Are you seriously considering getting one?

I think the Lamp on rear projection TV's has a limited life of around 4000 hours so that needs replacement.

I think until I know for certain what the lifespan of either plasma or the wega is I'll keep me Phillips!
I just hope the technology BEHIND the screens is up to scratch when I move house so I can get it all sorted before I move in!
Only problem is, it seems to be increasingly difficult to source information about the lifespan of these things! I wonder why ...

I was pretty shocked when I found that the lifespan of the plasma screens was only 2000 hours. That really is pretty pathetic - especially given the extremely high costs.

Like you said, its safer to wait and see what the situation is like when the dust settles and plasma becomes more afordable (and gets a longer lifespan)
