I need to use a PC disconnected from our network, but it has a peice of poorly written software on it , that needs the network services running, even if its not actually connected to the network (groan!). Ah ha thought I. I shall just put the loopback address (127.0.0.1) in the IP address box and all will be well, however NT will not let me do this without putting in subnet mask, I have tried all the subnets I can think of with no luck......

Anybody any ideas????

All it has to do is not suspend the browser & server services at boot without physically connecting to the network.

I know win95/98 does this - is NT too clever?

In the past I have used the MS Loopback Adapter to workaround this problem. However it's a real pain because, IIRC, you have to uninstall your current network adapter & reboot. Then when you want to connect to the network again, you have to reinstall the original network adapter and then reapply any service packs...

To install the MS Loopback Adapter, open the Network applet from the Control Panel. Click on the Adapters pane and select to Add a new Adapter. Select the MS Loopback Adapter from the list, etc...

I'd tried all combinations of zero's and 255's but obviously not that one. This has done the trick.
