Whats the system made out of? Ie whats subs, amps, speakers etc?

Kenwood are generally good all way round

I've allways liked Alpine head units but they have become fussy as of late, all that crapy EQ stuff they have started to build into their head units.

I would look at future proofing and go for a decent MP3 player, something like Nakamichi for sound quality.. Blaupunk are doing some good stuff at the moment too.

To be honest, I don't find a huuuge amount of difference quality wise in the brands. I'd go for something that you audition and like, but more importantly that you can use whilst driving. Steering mounted remotes are, IMHO, essential for safety.

FWIW, I've got a kenwood setup but it's getting a bit long in the tooth now. Still sounds as I want it to tho.
