Has anyone here got a plasma screen? I'd love one but they are all still pretty expensive and I can't really justufy spending £4-5,000+ on a TV no matter how great it looks. Anyone have any ideas of how long it'll be before they come down to a more reasonable amount? i.e. is anyone in the home entertainment industry? |

Saw one in a shop window , price tag said 10,000 big ones please .
|
Got a couple of these at work, huge Philips ones. Very nice but still sell for around 5K a chuck. Not sure what the cost is but I'm sure you'd still be looking at over 4K

AWD,
If you have the cash and the space, why not go front projection. Plasma screens are way to expensive and don't be supprised to see a new technology arrive with better pictures for cheaper money. (Shouldn't that be less.) IMO Plasma screens aren't as good as CRT. (I know it's subjective.) TBO I would get a large Widescreen CRT or a Rear Projection set. Although this is sensitive to where you put it and ambient light levels. People in the industry will be sworn to secrecy (sp). Just like Intel employees. P. |
Im with sith on this one front projection is definitely the way foward (pun intented http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif).

AWD,
I'd wait if I were you - at the moment Plasma screens are still on average around 7-8k. Since they've only been around comercially for about 18months - 2 years they'll come down in price an awful lot over the next 6-12 months. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif They'll be worth the wait though - picture quality is fantastic and they make great computer monitors http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Kelvin. Thanks for the info guys. I'd pretty much decided to wait and watch what happened as it is pretty new technology (for us in the general population anyway). I don't really have the space for a large projector driven TV, so I'll stick with the 28" 4:3 that I currently have and wait.... |
... but one day ... it will be mine .... HA HA HA HA (mad scientist laughter) (Sorry it's Friday) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif |
I was at the IBC conference in Amsterdam last month and there were several plasma tv's on display...
what can I say... WOW.. its like looking out of a window! |
i bought one of these a while ago
|
I was in the US recently and they had a high definition TV plasma screen in a shop. It was pretty amazing actually - and being the US it was about $6000. When that sort of technology gets cheaper, and when HDTV starts getting broadcast everywhere - that's what I'm waiting for. BTW is there any date set for HDTV transmissions in the UK? |
errr, If I remember correctly the plans for HDTV over hear have been put on the back burner for a while. Check
|
Marvelous! No HDTV in the UK either! Sith - I couldn't find anything on the homecinemachoice site about HDTV. In Australia when they were discussing releasing digital TV the government stated that all transmissions would have to be made in analogue, digital and HDTV forms - and that the brodcasting companies should pay for the costs of the multiple transmissions. Now that's what should be occuring here to promote things like Digital and HDTV (rather than people trying to increase the TV licence to fund their digital broadcasting). |
Hmmm
I have a back projection TV (Sony - so not the best) and I wouldn't recommend them. OK The picture is big (mines 48" - ooh err missus) but the picture's not as 'crisp' and the colours are no way as good as a Trinitron. I'd just live with a mid range widescreen Trinitron FD (completely flat) for a couple of £k and wait until the plasma screens come down in price. Gary (Ps anyone wanna buy a rear projection telly http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif ) |
Bajie How much was the Fujitsu in duty free? I'd like to see someone try to stow that in an overhead locker. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif |
Well, I saw a Fujitsu in duty free on Sunday.
The viewing angle is excellent. The screen is not very deep and the picture is awesome. To top it off, the bracket securing it to the wall was not very cumbersome. Plasma is definitely the way to go. Just need the prices to come down a bit more. |
Sorry, it was being used to display departure information.
It might be worth checking out how much they cost in the States though. Looking for a bargain I saw the Fuji advertised for 4,399. Called them and then they mentioned VAT. Put the phone down on them. Why can't people advertise Vat and Vat free? |
'cos they want to get your attention by putting the VAt free price up, and they hope that once ou've seen it, that you'll be willing to pay the VAT also. It's your basic to55er behaviour. |
In that case, when I come home and set up my own limited company I'll buy it all then.
I dare say they'll find some othere way to shaft me. |
Have a look at
|
Bajie - they always find some way to shaft everyone. Unless you're Rupert Murdoch and end up paying $1 in tax every year. Chris - nice site. Lots of stuff that made me glad that I'm not an impulse buyer. |
Thought you might say that http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
Trying very hard to not get tempted myself. Chris |
Chris, Give in to your Dark Side. Allow yourself to be tempted. You will have more viewing pleasure than you can ever imagine. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Been watching to many films I think! On a more sane level. If you are in the market for some Home Cinema. Try Unilet Sound and Vision. Ask for Vernon. Top bloke. They are in New Malden and also have another branch elsewhere. P. |

I'll see how good the bonus is next month! Chris |
Damn! Why do some people get £10k bonuses and I have to save up to give in to my dark side.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif |
AWD
If my bonus is 10K next month I'll be amazed (in fact staggered http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif). My firm dishes out the bonuses every quarter, so I don't think it'll quite reach to buying a plasma screen TV!! Chris (Living in hope that I might be wrong..) |
