my Win2K user profile was deleted so im using the Admin sign-in. Of course as its a diferent user i have a different desktop layout. Alot of folders are missing & pictures in 'My Pictures'

How do i see them, they havent physically been deleted from my harddrive have they?

ok to add to that, looking a the user profiles stored via the System console, i can see the profile i expect is the one. It is now called "account unknown"

what are extensions of profiles called/where are they kept & how do i reactivate it again?

Not sure if this is any use; there'll be far more knowledgeable people than me on here.

Use windows explorer and look in a folder on the C: drive called Documents and Settings. There should be a folder in there for each username that logs onto the PC. If its there you should at least be able to recover your data by copying the contents to another location or profile.

If the profile has been deleted either via Explorer or by System Properties (right click on My Computer, Properties, User Profiles) then everything will have gone. As the previous poster says head into "Documents and Settings" for a look.

Don't you have the profiles on a server?

InvisibleMan 15 December 2002 02:37 PM

its on a home pc. The one i sign in with, for some reason is no longer there. But as above, i can see as "account unknown"

There are the usual others, Administrator & guest, those ones i can "copy to..." but the account unknown ones i cant

Since this is a home pc, i think you have lost it.

But i dont mind being shot down if wrong.

Did you create a backup, after configuring it up the first time ??

Can you see a directory called "Documents and Settings"?

A user profile is stored in a directory under that (or in Win NT days c:\Winnt\profiles), you may not be able to get back the icon arrangement or colour scheme, but the My Documents and favourites directories, etc, should be accessible there. That's if the directory has not been deleted.
