Just reading this months Evo and there was a letter from someone stating that a major petrol company, or maybe a few of them, had dropped the octance level of SUL from 98 to 97!!!! Now, I know the Evo team have a wicked sense of humor, thus it could be (or I am) an april fool.

What's your take on this?

Oz 21 February 2000 04:13 PM

Yep, it's true. Do a search and you should find a few threads about this....

Unfortunately it's been 97 RON for a while now http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif I think John Felstead mailed the petrol companies and got the definitive answer.

Markus 21 February 2000 04:49 PM

Wow! there I was, waiting for you all to say 'April Fool!" and probably other disparaging comments.

Why no big announcement? or did I miss it?

DavidRB 21 February 2000 05:58 PM

It was phased in last year, but there was no announcement, hence the annoyance. Check the pumps closely, some say the RON number, but I'm sure that some don't. I wouldn't know anyway as I use 95 RON 'coz I'm a cheapskate. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

i mailed Shell UK, the BS standard was changed from 98RON to 97RON at the end of last year when LRP was launched. It's a national disgrace IMHO, i recon we are gonna see a load of melted race engines this year as most people dont know about the changes.

Markus,

Check out from August 99...

SR71 21 February 2000 10:48 PM

Not meaning to be funny or anything, but don't folk look at the pump numbers before they put fuel into their cars?

Its the first thing I do....

I've heard 97RON won't be with us for long either (from a mate in the fuel business) so start thinking about your remaps now.

Penni Whitehead 21 February 2000 10:56 PM

All the BP stations around here switched over just after Christmas from 98 to 97

I now buy my petrol from Esso - sod the Argos discount card... they're still doing 98 ... but for how long?? Esso in Ascot High Street is definitely doing it - and they're extremely slick and efficient in there as well.

Penni, no manufacturer has 98, its all 97 and has been for several months, don't be fooled by the pump stickers or the answers you may get from attendants.

Bob

johnfelstead 21 February 2000 11:04 PM

penni, if the esso pumps have a BS number on them then it aint 98, its 97. As far as i am awair all SUL is now 97, are you sure on this?

Paul Wilson 21 February 2000 11:30 PM

Well you never know Bob, ASCOT you know, probably a special supply smugled in from Iran by Afghan refugees to keep the local Hooray Hanrys happy http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Paul Wilson 23 February 2000 01:35 AM

From speaking to T.S. fuel companies were allowed 6 months to change 4* to LRP signage, whatever fuel they were selling.
Could be the same for 97/98
But 97/98 down to petrol companies NOT Government

I say kill 'em
I say screw 'em
I say crumpets and tea

Hi Guys

I actually wrote that letter to EVO that was published in the last issue....
It pissed me off big time that this damaging change from 98 to 97 was not made public - the sooner we knew the sooner we could act.
I went to trading standards & informed them of the fact many pumps in the area were still advertising 97RON as 98RON.
Just a week later I got a letter back from Trading Standards to say all pumps in my area were now showing 97RON because they had contacted them......at least a minor victory.

Honestly it says 98 on the pump that's why I'm buying it... the BP's say 97... the Esso says 98 - this could be a job for the Trade's Discription...? False advertising... I'm being conned into buying something that's not... I'm going to take a picture..
I made a special trip over there on Saturday just to get the damn stuff... bums..bums bums
I'm mad now...really mad...

johnfelstead 23 February 2000 12:52 PM

there are still pumps out there labelled as 4 star instaed of LRP aswell. The best ones are labelled both 4 star and LRP.

Youve been conned penni, screw em http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif
