Have recently changed the petrol I am using in WRX MY02.
I had been using standard Super Unleaded but have recently changed to Super Unleaded 98ron from Q8.
Have noticed a dramatic decrease in mpg. Is this just a transition period while the ecu adjusts or is this the norm?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

The MY02 ecu should adjust almost immediately (no need for a reset). Better quality fuel should give a UK car smoother pick up and MORE mpg. I would try the old stuff agian and see what you are getting or a different SUL like Esso SUL or Shell Optimax and compare.

I thought 98 RON didnt exist in the uk anymore. Saying that, when i picked up my scoob in folkestone the BP garage i when to fill up at had a 98RON sticker on the SUL pump. Maybe they just cant get around to putting the 97RON stickers on.

Cheers

I am almost certain that the SUL we buy is 97RON. I haven't tried it yet though but I may be tempted if mpg is lowered as this should counteract the extra cost of the fuel. How much is SUL nowadays ?

Depends where you are in the country. The extra cost over 95RON is normally offset by better mpg.

I wouldnt put anything less than 97RON in a scoob, I pay insurnace on a performance car so why should I skimp on fuel which dents the performance ;).

The reason most SUL is 97 RON is that its shares its base with LRP (DO NOT USE LRP IN A SCOOB BTW). It does seem that a few petrol compabies offer a 98 RON SUL. Shells optimax is suppose to be 98.6 and I have heard BP sell a proper 98 RON SUL. Not sure if that correct though.

I have switched from optimax to super unleaded from esso, and i have noticed better mpg and smoother pick up etc. Now i don't know whether this is in my head or not !

Could be a case of the emporers new clothes. Are the benefits "imagined". My WRX's performance seems dependent upon the weather conditions. Cool dry seems the best. Having the aircon on also causes mine to hesitate like a three legged horse at a turnstile.

i have been running my my00 on q8 super unleaded 98 for about 9 weeks now ,it does make the car a lot smoother,pick-up better, and seems faster.about getting more mpg i am not sure but it is not worse. when the wife is driving she gets about 24/25 mgp.on a long steady run on motorway we get almost 30 mpg

I've been using mostly Optimax since new (odd tank of BP etc) but the other day was running low so had to find fuel fast - ended up buying a tank full of Sainsbury's Super Unleaded. I didn't expect things to be quite so bad, but the performance drop was way too much. After filling up with Optimax today, it was like driving another car, very responsive, much more power. I'm sticking with Optimax, it's miles better.
