I've just received my renewal notice from Admiral and it's gone up by £600, yes this isn't a typo.

I've not had any claims, there's been no mods to the car and I haven't got any younger http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

I'm too angry to speak to them today, but I can't see how they can justify nearly £1700 when I've gotton another year closer to 30 and another years NCB.

I've had a search for some other companies, so I'll keep you all posted.

What I'd like some advice on is how to get keep the cost as low as possible ? I'm told adding my parents would reduce the cover, so has anyone any good suggestions for a RB5er, 27yr old, 2yrs NCB (company car I'm afraid), ML1 post code, private driveway (with big security gates I might add) and an SP30 conviction.

Ever feel like Insurers are just taking the p*ss ?

Aksan 03 February 2000 02:36 PM

Jeez,

I'm an RB5er too and I'm also insured with Admiral. The mind boggles as to what they'll want from me in May. The only saving grace is I'll be 33 by then, though that's not much comfort to you, sorry.

I can only sympathise. The key is, don't just accept it - ring around get some more competitive quotes (shouldn't take long....) and get back to 'em. After all, some premium is better than nothing. However, they may not see it that way.

Try Norwich Union and Norwich Union direct (different companies). I got the best quote from them for my standard UK Turbo. Tried Adrian S Flux, I.M's own insurance etc...

I think it came to £550 for 31yr old, SP30 & SP50, very low crime rate, on drive (no credit for the very heavy duty collapsible post and disklok).

Let us know how you get on.

Jason

Ozzy

hope it helps
Iain.

Ozzy,

I to was quoted over double for my renewal from Admiral - £600 last year to just under
£1200. Something tells me they don't want our business ? I'm a 28 year old girlie living in the Romford area, full NCB never
been caught speeding. ! Ive been given a quote of £579 from AXA Direct.

Hope this is of some use !!??

Good luck !!.

WigWam 03 February 2000 06:50 PM

Admiral are a complete shower for this: I think they reckon you`ll be lazy and just renew automaticaly at the new rate. They did the same to me on my integrale insurance.

~try privelege or anyone else for that matter

Jonathan Witts 03 February 2000 08:28 PM

Just re-newed with Bennetts

£710, 1 yr NCB, Surrey, Old git of 35, spanking clean licence, no claims in last 5 years

Good luck

Jon

P.S if you need the No drop me an email and I will dig it out

I had a similar experience with Guardian through Bennetts Elite...

Firstly they refused to insure me last May when I swapped my standard MY96 Turbo for a RB5 WR Sport (insurance still had 3.5 months to run on it) and then they proceeded to tell me that because I had less than 4 months left on the policy, that they wouldn't be refunding any money to me.

Secondly, after Bennetts managed to get me a cheaper (yes cheaper for my RB5 WR Sport with new insurers than previous standard MY96) policy, when the original one expired I received a letter stating that the renewal would be twice that of the previous years policy.

Bennetts informed me that Guardian had been taken over by another company and as a consequence their underwriting criteria had been altered, hence the increase in policy and change in attitude.

The best thing to do is to shop around for a couple of hours on the telephone. I do this every year, although it can be extremely tedious and even if you do not manage to better your original renewal premium, at least you are safe in the knowledge that you are getting the best deal.

The more people that do this, the less likelyhood of Insurance companies getting complacent.

I am currently paying approx £500 for fully comp on my RB5 WR Sport, max no claims and mid-way between 35 and 40, fingers crossed for the next renewal!!!!

ozzy 04 February 2000 09:55 AM

Thanks for replies people.

Today's the day that I'll waste most of the day stuck on the phone to get insurance quotes so I'll keep you posted.

What really gets my goat up is they assume you'll just pay such a ridiculous premium - the renewal even had all my credit card details just ready to send me to the poorhouse.

An another thing, last year when I bought the car I was quoted about £750 about 1 month before taking delivery. My Golf was insured with Admiral at the time, so when I then swapped cars, they wanted .. wait for it .. an extra £600 quid. One month I pay £750 for a new policy, the next it's over £1200 ?!?!?!?

SCOOBETTE,

It would appear that Admiral HEAVILY discount new policies to intice new customers, then come renewal it can be nearly double the cost.

Anyway, got to go, there's a phone waiting for me.

I've just had my renewal through from Admiral and would have been my 3rd year with them. I paid £560 last year, this year they want £690 which is over a 20% increase. Thats for a 98uk, 27yrs old, full NCB, SP30 in 95 and garaged overnight.
I've rang most companies that have come up on the search and they range from £700 to £1500.
I'm tempted by Greenlight even though they are a bit more expensive but seem to give decent Trackday cover.

DLG 04 February 2000 01:40 PM

Is there something odd about me?

Continued with Admiral when I changed from MX-5 to new Turbo last year. Have just renewed with Admiral for this year at lower premium, approx £550 (Tracker discount,35 years old, full NCB, no points, rural Suffolk plus 27 year old wife on policy)

ptholt 04 February 2000 08:31 PM

Folks, just to clear up the admiral story -
Admiral have been (or are being) bought out and as a result renewals are going through the roof !

My family car (frod galaxy) has gone up 45% to nearly a grand !!
Dared not to ask what my sti 5 would be now !

And a word of advice for those of you on the admiral 'bonus accelerator'
some companies will not accept it.
You can get round this by quoting the actual period insured rather than the inflated amount quoted in your admiral renewal (there should be a period of time quoting actual insurance period on your renewal rather than the accelerator bit.)

We found Tesco's new car insurance to be VERY good. brought the galaxy WAY down below other quotes.

They were also quoting me £600 for my 98 imprezza with two drivers (29 + 27) whoi each have 3 points for speeding. Seemed decent to me.
Or at least it was till i told them it was an import wrx sti 5 - st which point it went to £900 and they wanted a cat 1 and a tracker installed !!

Just thought I'd let you all know how my Insurance struggle finished.

I tried all of the following companies:-

Bennetts Elite 0870 6061626
Quoteline Direct 0990 143424
Halifax 0800 200370
Direct Line 0845 1268701
OPI 0870 2420800
Norwich Union Direct 0800 888 111
Adrian Flux 01553 777888
Bell Direct 0800 567568
Greenlight 01277 263030
Gladiator 0800 908080
Hastings Direct 0800 001066
NFU Mutual 01604 883726
AXA Direct 0800 0643292

Out of all that these were the ones who quoted BELOW £2000. The highest quote was over £5000 (Hastings Direct) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Quoteline Direct £1399.55
Gladiator £1463.61
Norwich Union Direct £1972.96
Direct Line £1768.20
AXA Direct £1017.63

All have £250 excess.

Considering my current insurer (good old Admiral) were quoting over £1700 quid, I took great pleasure in telling them where to shove their renewel http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

One good thing with Gladiator and AXA is they take into account that I drove a company car for 3 years. This gave me my full NCD, which I can then take with me (if) I move insurers.

So, AXA Direct it is. I've saved over £700 from my renewal and I'm paying less than I did last year. Needless to say the world could end tomorrow and I'd still be smiling http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

PaulL 21 February 2000 10:03 AM

As I mentioned in another thread, AXA Direct are infact the same company as Guardian Direct, but different from AXA insurance.

Also, they will NOT allow mods such as Scoobysport backbox http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Devils Advocate 21 February 2000 10:47 AM

Not good news re: Norwich Union and CGU being combined, this is almost certainly goind to mean that Insurance premiums with these companies go into orbit !

ozzy 21 February 2000 01:14 PM

Yeah,

It is a bit of a nightmare that AXA won't allow any mods, but I've saved myself over £450 quid from the nearest premium. If I wanted to fit a Scoobysport BB (and I do), then it would have cost me £700 to switch policies AND the cost of the BB.

It just means there's more money for the mods next year, and I'll have a full NCD too boot.

Once I've had the policy for a few months I'll try my luck again with getting them to accept the mods - you never know http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Stefan

yunus 21 February 2000 01:38 PM

but do AXA cover imports?
