Hi Tony

I went from MY98 to Focus 1.6 Zetec, they're great little cars, handles well, I'm averaging around 40-42mpg at the moment, motorway and urban driving.

My Focus is currently for sale if you're interested... Focus

Cheers

Steve

We bought my Wife a Focus 1.8 Zetec Estate. It's a fine car - I don't think that there is much difference in performance wise, but I guess the 1.8 has a bit more guts if you fill the car up with gear etc.

We regularly use it to take our Son and all is associated clobber to see his grandparents etc - At a steady 90 on the motorway I get about 340 miles to a tank - not sure what MPG that is though!

Good value, go and test them both and take it from there.

get a 1.8. If you are thinking of the 1.6 for economy and you do motorway miles at reasonable speeds.... then forget it. Working the 1.6 hard will use more fuel than the 1.8.

... plus the 1.6 is so free revving that to get any decent performance all you keep doing is hitting the red line which i am never keen on doing.

Ta for the info.

Looking at one for around £6k ish....if I manage to sell the Scoob. Just gone in Trader today. If it doesn't sell, I won't be moving house....but will still have a big grin as I'll still have the Scoob!! :) :)

(started to look at the Pug 306 XSI/GTI6 as well...)

I had a 2.0 for 18 months, and have just returned a 1.6 hire car after a week. I was amazed at how quick and free revving the 1.6 was. Took it over to France and ragged it :) easy 110 mph cruise (on the clock), but only 27 mpg :o

I think if you were using it around town the 1.6 may be the way to go, but on a motorway you'd want the extra ponies.

I had a 1.8LX for 12 months as a company car. The performance was OK if you thrashed the nads off it. (Got upto 130 on the dial in Germany) I covered 50000 miles in the year at an average of 37MPG, dipping to 34 if I cruised at 100 and not 90 on the motorway. Worst was 27MPG on a sprint cross country from London to the top of Dartmoor (200 miles in 3 hours - doesnt sound great but you try it).

Mine was a 99T and the seats were crap. The new LX is better, but IMHO if you are buying a new one or there are any about used/exdemo or imported try and get the TDCi. They are a lot faster then the petrol (especially in the fast lane on the motorway) and I was getting 45MPG and that was being far then gentle
