Kevin, whats your point?

Kevin Greeley 20 February 2000 01:20 AM

I've always thought of Holland/Amsterdam as a fairly safe place. Very strange that the poor chap was apparently killed whilst trying to buy a car.

Be careful out there.

Kevin.

Speculation:
Maybe the villains knew he had a cash deposit on him??

johnfelstead 20 February 2000 01:56 AM

if you go loaded with cash then you are very foolish. If he was over there on a holiday buying a burger would it be reported?

very unlikely i think.

Just use your common like you would in the UK, dont see how this is relevent.

If i was very cynical then i would propose that this story was highlighted by the UK car dealers.

Keep old joe public in fear of trying something new and saving a mint?

Seriously, who has ever heard of anyone contacting car import firms and having anybody call on them in person, from the UK let alone the country of purchase.

If teams of three Dutchmen are roaming the country on behalf of personal importers, I'll eat my hat.

I'd suggest Amsterdam is as dangerous as any other large European city, if you don't know which bits to avoid.

With respect, I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye.

Davvers 20 February 2000 10:49 AM

The dutch don't only deal in cheap cars you know, and I'm sure his family wouldn't say, 'Oh yeah, he went over to buy some drugs'. BTW collecting my Impreza next month from Rotterdam - wish me luck!

I just found this news item on teletext :

POLICE APPEAL OVER MAN'S MURDER
Dutch police have appealed for help in finding the killers of a Kent man shot dead on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

Terry French, 49, of Deal, was found in the Amstel river. He had told relatives he was going abroad to buy a car.

Police are trying to identify three Dutch men who visited Mr French in Deal last summer. Anyone with information should call Dover Police.
end.

With due respect to the relatives etc.

Why go to Amsterdam to buy a car?? There are a lot of other "safe" places to buy a Scoob from :-)

BTW Kevin how did you come about a MY00 in 555blue? Surely not bought in the UK?

I have worked in Deal and over the last few years there has been a serious drug supply problem.

There were a spate of murders after a huge haul of drugs were confiscated from a boat moored just off the town.

I seriously suspect the car angle is a red herring! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif

I agree with Anders I have a Dutch uncle and he confirmed that the they rarely choose to shoot Englanders buying cars despite the Boer War. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Also living in this dangerous country and near Amsterdam and even working in Amsterdam, what a hero I must be!
Amsterdam is a very safe city and of course sometimes people get shot here ,but it's most of the time drugdealers ripping each other.
So for normal people no problem at all,and if you want to buy a car ,Amsterdam is not the place to be ,they don't have a proper Subaru dealer there.

Paul Wilson 21 February 2000 12:21 PM

Amsterdam is not the place to HAVE a car, as far as I can tell from my visit last year.

Kevin Greeley 21 February 2000 12:25 PM

I imported my car from Holland. The dealer was near Rotterdam but I flew into Amsterdam where I stayed overnight.
