Looking at potential engine swaps for the Mk1.

Has anyone had any experience of either:
a) Supercharging standard engine (after a rebuild)
b) 16v Mk2 lump
c) 2.8 VR6

Alternatively, are there any golf specialists in Hampshire/Surrey that I could get in touch with?

They may be able to help or at least give some advice.

B and C to me would appear to be simpler and probably cheaper alternatives. I've definately seen a version of C done in a Golf mag. Major issues I heard were heat output from V6 and front end weight. Get a copy of GOLF or something like that and you'll see the people offering it.

16v is definately possible and was available from VW(in a slightly different config though than std MK II 16v(I think using older injection system).

Nice one guys - the weight was my main concern over the 2.8 engine.

Stu, have you tried this conversion? Is it basically a supercharged 16v Mk2 engine? Does anyone do aftermarket superchargers for the 16v engine?

I had a Mk2 G60 8v for a few years (sadly I sold it - I can honestly say I still miss it even though I have the Scoob). I don't know much about the 16v G60 conversions. The words "complicated" and "expensive" come to mind and for FWD I'm not sure that the extra power will be that useful. Maybe you should consider getting a 1.8 G60 bored out to 2.0ltr???

Jabbasport seem to be the supercharger gurus from what I remember - maybe they can advise?

MK3 16 valve 2.0, 150 bhp standard, de-tuned by VW so as not to affect sales of the VR6, 200 bhp is attainable, 175 bhp at modest cost, the VR6 in a MK1 would be quick but completely arse the handling. 150 in a MK1 would be fun, 175 mental.

i have a mk1 golf running a 1.8 carb engine on twin 40`s with cam and gas flowed head, its not finished yet, but i cant wait for the end result...
g60 and vr6 conversions cost around £4000-5000 the ultimate is an S3 engine conversion (yes that is an audi s3 engine)
16v conv will cost less than £2000

16v engine would be the most cost effective, you need a specialist manifold from somewhere like tsr performance they are about £175.
the rest just bolts straight in, easy peasy.
all my work has been carried out by dubsport in wigan, but tsr may well be nearer to you.

Cheers all - Dubsport will do a G60 conversion for 3 grand which sounds pretty interesting.

A 16v is £1750 but I think I'd rather spend the extra and get a supercharger for tunability.

ive had 2 mk1 1.8 GTI and at the time looked at doing conversions on both. Your best be it stay away from any VR6 conversions cos without traction control on a car that weight 840kg youve got nothing except a whole in your bank account

Personaly i would have gone for a G60!
