A friend of mine has two networked PCs and was about to sign up with plusnet for a self install connection using a USB modem, when they spotted a note that said you cannot use file sharing when connecting on the home surf package.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Internet Connection Sharing for an ADSL connection using a USB modem ? I would have expected it to work, given that the ip address and adapter used for accessing the internet is different to the one used by the ethernet cards for networking the two PCs. PCs are networked using 2 10/100 ethernet cards and a crossover cable, one is WinXP (this would have the modem) and the other is Win98.

Could this just be the standard blurb trying to talk you into a more pricey package with a subnet ?

Yes m8 it does work.
I have BT's openworld whatsit, USB modem,dynamic ip addressing,
2 pc's connected via a mini hub. pc that connects to internet is win98 2nd edit, pc on the sharing, is win 2k.

They mean peer to peer sharing, eg KaZaA, not file sharing between home PCs. Specifically, it says ADSL Home Surf does not support file sharing (peer-2-peer) software or binary newsgroup articles.

The Home Surf product is a no-frills package. If you want to use peer-to-peer software, get the ADSL Home product instead - for the extra £2 a month.

I just checked the site and the reference to file sharing is to do with KaZaA, Gnutella, Edonkey, Napster, WinMX, Aimster and Audiogalaxy file sharing, not the internet connection sharing, so it should be OK.

He would be better off using a Router rather than a USB Modem & ICS....

I almost feel a ADSL FAQ for Scoobynet coming on....
