Tis the season to be jolly (bah humbug! :D)

Ok, father has put in his request for is pressie and he wants a DVD player (and people say kids ask for expensive gifts! :D lol)

Anyway, Dad does not want anything too special, he certainly does not want nor need a 500 quid super funky all singing all dancing DVD player.

So, what I'm looking at is around 200 - 250 quid mark for a dvd player. It MUST be region free (ideally without me having to handset hack it)

So, what players are out there for that price?

Can I buy them online, if so where?

Thanks.

check out www.uk.kelkoo.com

price comparison site with plenty of choice in that price range sony, panasonic, pioneer, etc and it shows sites selling multi region machines...

edited to say check out multizonedvd.com banner on there - slimline Pioneer DV 454 multiregion for £149 delivered

Markus 22 November 2002 02:20 PM

I don't work in London :( but... will check out RS website, have got stuff from them before and they are tops! thanks for the memory jog!

father_jack 22 November 2002 02:30 PM

Don't skimp - get a Linn Movie Classik - only about 2G's :D

Markus 22 November 2002 02:34 PM

lol! If I was getting a Linn it would go in my room and the ol fella could have my PS2

Am looking at richer sounds website, mmmm, Marantz, mmmmm. Nice! and not too bad! Seems my bro wants to chuck some dosh into this so looks like dad could be getting a rather nice player, hmm, maybe that Linn would be good! :D

Markus....i heard recently that richer sounds were selling the Sony DVP900 for around £250ish.Its an end of line model.I bought mine about a year ago and it cost me £430:eek:.

I can definately recommend it.For that price you wont get anything better.
Also great for playing CD's.

:D

Markus 22 November 2002 02:38 PM

don't have a 900 listed, but they do have a 700 for £189.95, which to be honest is cheap! They still have the good ol Wharfedale 750s as well, which I know and love

edited to say that the RRP for the 700 is about £449, so 190 quid is bloomin good.

Ladies and Gents, I think we have a winnnnaaaaaaaa!!!!!

bugger! 700 only available to in store callers.

south-star 22 November 2002 02:46 PM

Just checked also. The 900 is not listed as you say.:(

father_jack 22 November 2002 02:50 PM

Markus - the Linn is amazing, mate at works just got one. Superb picture quality and the first AV amp with decent CD playback. Tempted to get one meself.
I don't see the point spending more that 100 notes on the one for your old man though. The multi-region Toshiba at RS should fit the bill.

south-star 22 November 2002 02:59 PM

Apparently Richer sounds have about 25 Sony 900's in stock, black and multiregion for £249.They normally sell for around £400.You have to call your nearest store though. Not on the website.

Its the one i've got and am very happy with it.

Markus,

Try these guys. I've bought from them several times before and cannot recommend them enough. They list several multi-region players and most Sonys go multi-region with a minor hack.

Edited to add that they are now listing the Panasonic super slimline machine that gets good reviews.

Cheers

Ian

Linn Classic Movie

Not even close to £2000 if you know where to look. Don't let all that "Linn don't give discounts" nonsense put you off.

You can buy a system without speakers for £1600 or with a full, decent quality, five speaker package from Tannoy for £2000.

Oh you need to know where to look - do a Google search on Peter Tyson and follow the Linn links. I don’t know how to make it clickable but its here http://www.petertyson.co.uk/offeronmoviestannoy.shtml

No associations etc. but that where I got mine but they did a Linn speaker deal then. Perhaps they'll do that for you if you ask.

Rob.

I hear good things about this one: SCAN 440-LSI. Well featured, multi-region, and £116.

father_jack 22 November 2002 04:37 PM

Aye the bloke that bought the Classik (£1300 on ebay) just got a set of Linn Keosas from Peter T's. for £209 - bargain!

Markus 22 November 2002 05:04 PM

Thanks Mark, looks like a nice machine too!
