let's hope my GF doesn't see this. I want some eardrums left.

SiDHEaD 19 November 2002 09:09 PM

and besides which, as long as that posh slut Diana doesn't win, it's all good.

blair 19 November 2002 09:11 PM

Not sure about great - but deffo more of a great Briton than fecking Diana princess of wales.

Is she really still in the lead in the polls ?

FFS she was a publicity seeking, manipulative cow.

Controversial maybe, but just my opinion

:D

uncle buck 19 November 2002 09:11 PM

don't worry, Winnie will see the dumb Sloaner off.... :D:D

blair 19 November 2002 09:13 PM

We should start a campaign for all 19453 Scoobynet members to vote for the least likely candidate

Who else is up for the vote and what's the website address ?

:)

SiDHEaD 19 November 2002 09:13 PM

well said blair :D

Mr evolution 19 November 2002 11:35 PM

Maybe he is considerd great because he spread a message of peace and love across the whole world that is still being heard today. People believed what he had to say and tried to live up to it. How does building a few bridges and a train track compare to that.

MATTeL 20 November 2002 08:33 AM

blair - This actually happened in the Muppet forum (), Numptie got people to vote for Brunel (as we was second) after two days the woman dropped from top spot! ;)

MATTeL 20 November 2002 08:40 AM

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/programmes/greatbritons/

Brunel is still first with Diana second!

blair 20 November 2002 08:55 AM

At last - something useful is found in the muppet forum !

:D :D

Second is still too close - I'm off to vote

Rant mode on: remember him for the Beatles, as a team player, not for any of the solo stuff. (Just Like) Starting Over', 'Woman', 'Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)', 'Jealous Guy', Watching the Wheels? Emasculated and inane. Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Power To The People, Give Peace A Chance? Pathetic platitudes posing as humanitarian politics.

Imagine? Don't get me started. Nice sentiment, but doesn't make it a great song. 'Cold Turkey'? OK, but what's clever about a millionaire who couldn't find anything better to do with his time and money than spend it on smack and then whine about it?

Still, look on the bright side: if McCartney had been shot we'd have people telling us that "Venus & Mars" is a great album.

Rant mode off.

Wow, for once I agree with someone called "Blair" :D:D Normally, whenever I hear that name I get mad and start swearing !

Mr Evolution, yep, you're right... the world's a pretty peaceful place at the moment innit ?? Well done Lennon, NOT !

Its a sad thing if people like Diana or Lennon or any other pop stars win a poll like this.. ... mind you, its also a good indication of the sort of people who vote in polls like this.

People who discovered planets and space, medicines, saved this country from invasion etc. are surely far more important than peace campaigners and song writers. without Lennon or McCartney we wouldn't have the Beatles and maybe a zillion Beatle clones, without Diana there might have been something interesting on the cover of a lot of magazines since 1980, but without the real people of our history, we'd be fooked !! Perspective required methinks..

mattstant 20 November 2002 12:08 PM

lennon was arrogant and naive in the extreme and had the obligatory oversized scouse chip on his shoulder.
If he had given away more than 50% of his vast fortune for a good cause he might have rated somewhere at the bottom of the top 1000 great britons

In respect to actually getting off her backside and contributing (ie landmines campaign) Diana rates better than him and i dont think she deserves to be in the top 100

It is symptomatic of the balance of perceptions of the benefits of Science and technology to society vs. the importance of celebrity. If Gareth Gates was in the pole I'm sure he'd win it.

It is a pole of popularity rather than 'greatness', at least in terms of the real meaning of the word. I can believe that JL qualifies, but can't really see why Diana does apart from by virtue of her position in the Royal Family.

Great (adj., great·er, great·est.)

1) Very large in size.
2) Larger in size than others of the same kind.
3) Large in quantity or number: A great throng awaited us. See synonyms at large.
4) Extensive in time or distance: a great delay.
5) Remarkable or outstanding in magnitude, degree, or extent: a great crisis.
6) Of outstanding significance or importance: a great work of art.
7) Chief or principal: the great house on the estate.
8) Superior in quality or character; noble: “For he was great, ere fortune made him so” (John Dryden).
9)Powerful; influential: one of the great nations of the West.
10) Eminent; distinguished: a great leader.
11) Grand; aristocratic.

Mr evolution 20 November 2002 07:13 PM

The likes of Churchill diddn't win the war how close to the front lines did he get.

If you actually think about it as soon as America got involved in the war there was only one winner.

Great leaders avoid wars they don't fight them.

All technology becomes outdated but the message in john Lennons music is still as relevent today as it was thirty years ago. It does not matter What your personal opinion is because millions of people fully believed in what he had to say. This then gave him the opportunity to spread a message to a bigger worldwide audience than any organization has reached before or probably will again. This in my opinion fully qualifies him to be considerd as one of the greatest Briton of all time.

Scoob99 20 November 2002 07:41 PM

Thanks Mr evolution, John Lennon, is and always will be one of the best songwriters this world will ever see, Yes I agree that some of the things he did was not always right, But without him and Paul, George and Ringo this world would have been a sadder place to be.
Cheers
Colin
