As an official on the Network Q rally I get to drive the stages.
I decided to take my scoob this year to have some fun.
The results were a very dirty car and very very big smiles.

Big thanks to the marshals at the start of Margam SS16/17 for thinking I was a SUBARU GRAVEL CAR, made my day that did.

More pics to follow later this week.

Bet it's clean now :D

So you got to marshall at Margam?

Arron 19 November 2002 02:40 PM

Hi Mark,
What a bloody cock up in Halfway.

Yes I was Sector Official in Margam, It was an awesome drive in to stage, I wont tell you how quick we were going cos I cant believe it, the scoob was just so sure footed, plain AWESOME.

I did the same a few years ago driving a mitsubishi evo 1 :) It was excellent fun driving the stages :)

ChrisB 19 November 2002 03:24 PM

For those not marshalling on the rally, try the Raiders Forest Road

10 miles of gravel track through the Galloway forest. Huge fun - just watched out for Landie's coming the other way :D :D

Paulo P 19 November 2002 03:44 PM

Hmmm looks like fun :D do you need 4 wheel drive for that?

Hi Arron

We saw your car at the stage start M8 it looks great.
Did you see us ? We were in convoy my silver M reg plus a grp N skoda,a Discovery and a Transit service barge.

Driving down the stage to J22 was awsome if a little bit rough in places.Highlight had to be being buzzed by the gravel crews and trying to follow them, there was no way we could keep up but the Skoda gave it a good go.

Thanks Chris,
I did see the cars ( parked on the slope at Halfway near the hairpin )I thought the Skoda was a mate's old rally car but it was'nt.
As I said the marshals at stage start thought I was a gravel car chuffed !
I did see a silver scoob with the reg NOJ was this you guys !

Arron.

p.s. Thanks for the comment on my car,I was tempted to leave it dirty but I could'nt bring myself to it, so I washed it today.

Blackscooby 19 November 2002 05:04 PM

Nasty looking "wavey" lines through the muck on the side.....

Hope the underlying scratches polished out.

you tart ;) Did you not bottom it out in the forests?

Paulo P 19 November 2002 05:07 PM

oh and that ariel (sp?) on the roof completes the look too :cool:

Arron 20 November 2002 08:36 AM

Blackscooby : The wavy lines were done when the mud was wet so fortunately it came out when I washed it. Then some **** at my work decided as a joke to write the word DIRTY down the side, this did not come out as the mud had dried, it's left a couple of scratches on the back door so I'm a bit pi$$ed off about it ( just need to wait for the security video to see what ****e did it) .

Paul :The car was just unreal on the stages ( it's home ), it did'nt bottom out once although we were picking our way around the stages.
The aerial on the roof is for the a cb radio, there was 27 of us from my rally club in about 12 or so cars and we all had them plus two way radios to keep in contact on the road sections and stages .

As you can see we all had a blast and althouh this was the first year I took the scoob ( having previously owned a uk 98 for the last 4 years ) it will most definately not be the last.

Hi Arron,

Sounds like you had a great time. Hope to get to the Wharf on Thursday so can catch up with your tails of joy then.

Excuse my ignorance but: Gravel Car = support vehicle ????

Dave

P20SPD 20 November 2002 01:26 PM

mine is still covered in mud, although it got a little bit of the wash due to the rain on the way home on sunday:D

Arron 20 November 2002 01:52 PM

Dave,
A gravel car or tyre car as sometimes known is a car the main competitors ( manufacturers )use to confirm tyre choice.
The gravel/tyre cars are sent out a few hours or so before 1st car is due on stage and takes notes of surface changes and conditions and recomends a tyre choice and compound.

SUBARU = SUBARU
PEUGEOT = PEUPEOT
MITSI = MITSI
FORD = VOLVO ?

VERY IMPORTANT JOB !

Hope this kind of explains it.

Hi Arron

Yep NOJ was my car.Don't know how you didn't manage to bottom out though, I was being careful in the rough bits and still managed to catch the underneath in a couple of places.

Mines still got an inch of mud on it until tomorrow when it's going to get a good going over with the jet wash.

The Skoda managed to rip half his exhaust off in his quest to keep up with the gravel crews, good job we had the service barge with us with some tools in it.

Hi Chris,
I was in my STI 7 and the ride height is two miles high.

I was going to get it lowered but thought better of it until after the event.
