on my way home from work as usual i was overtaken on a clear stretch of dual road by some tatty old looking RS turbo escort, anyway, wanting to show who is boss i gave chase, within seconds being up his arse. the gimp infront doesn't like to let me pass so takes up both lanes...

eventually i get past him and cant see him for much longer when all of a sudden... Vrooooommmmmmm..... purple astra GTE comes outa no where... floored it, caught up with him and could see the car wasn't no where near standard... gave it some, come up next to him but then he was off, woulda never caught him..

got back home and see the driver in petrol station, asked him what he had done to the engine expecting some huge turbo or summing, he told me that he had a 'zorst, filter and a minor bit of head work equating to around 175BHP. wondering why i lost i asked hime, he replyed with the following stats...

GTE16V@ 175BHP. gearbox losses 17% of power due to 2WD,

UKspec turbo@220BHP. losses 42% of power due to 4WD, plus an extra 5-8% for the extra 2 wheels, bearings e.t.c.

not only that but the Mk2 astra is more aerodynamic even th its 20 years old...

now i know why all these VX drivers keep beating me, because they are so good...

Fosters 04 October 2001 07:46 AM

It might help to know what you're driving?
Turbo, I presume. what year? any mods?

I've never had any problems with the 'traditional' max power cars (I've never had a run in with a cossie) and there have been quite a few of them. His best bet is on a straight road, but still I'm a little surprised.

Rikki 95WRX 04 October 2001 07:52 AM

Fosters - I think this may be another "take the bait type post".

This is quite clearly absolute cock.
42% loss for 4 wheel drive plus 8% for wheels and bearings!!!
What was this Astra then, a motorbike? Doesn't it have 4 wheels and associated bearings?
He quotes gearbox losses in on breath and driven wheels in the next.

I'm sorry but the only car that suffers 50% transmision losses is a 300,000 mile 2CV that's on it's way to the knackers yard.

Either the whole story is fabricated, the Astra driver had had LOTS more work done than he says or there is something wrong with your Impreza.

Neil.

LEE P 04 October 2001 08:36 AM

LOL so 42 percent gearbox, 5-8 percent bearings? so as a ruff guide it loses 50 percent of its power, so at the wheels it must be about 110bhp then plus bad aerodynamics. jesus how does my scoob get to 100 mph in fourteen seconds standard. it always felt like a slow car. NOT!!!

DominicA 04 October 2001 08:45 AM

jonnyg, the only gimp on the road was you with your big red plastic ball gag stuffed in yer gob... go find a gimp BBS to play on if you can put put yer tiny limp prick down for long enough!!

wilf 04 October 2001 08:53 AM

What about deducting an extra 20% for the weight of the parcel shelf mounted subwoofers in the back of the astra?

Out of interest johnny where did your 17% and 42% come from. Very exact figures - this man was clearly an expert on cars (not) and a statistical genius(not) - especially when the driver only knew he had "about" 175bhp and that a standard Impreza had 220bhp (which is incorrect).

I know what you mean Jonney, I was in my mates P1 on the way back from Manchester Cruise last week end when we got passed on the M62 by a nutter in an AstraMax van. Tore past us like he was in a hurry. Music so loud the side panels were visibly shaking, his bit of totty in the passenger seat looked like a real hussy. Watching some music video on an in dash LCD TV, in a van for christ sake!

I mean why the hell did he feel the need to be going so fast? We were doing 135mph.....

You can calculate it quite easily. Just think of an astra van's top speed and double it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

It's easy to work out. Just think of your IQ and double it.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

either that or think of the number of times your mum has rented herself out from your trailer park in the last week, and multiply it with the number of sexual relations you have had with the june copy of max power. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

lol @ kranky. don't usually get involved in these threads as they are completely pointless (although entertaining) but just had to show my appreciation to kranky for that last comment.

I'm sure that I would have had loads of 'sessions' with max power if it was a w**k mag (like it is now) when I was a kid.

mmm..---foooooroddd---escooorttytt...urrrgwithbigwheels.....

urghhh-- aahhh.

lol

Kippax 04 October 2001 03:59 PM

jonnyg. The same thing happened to me. I was in my scoob (Type RA STi, 340bhp, 350 lb/ft torque, 0-60 in 4 seconds) flat out on the M6 on my way back from Litchfield and this old biddy on a Honda Melody thrashed it past at about 190. She was wearing a wetsuit smeared in vaseline and had her chin on the tank and her elbows tucked nicely behind the fairing. Pissed me off that. Apparently it's something to do with aerodynamics and only having one wheel drive.

MyDreamCar 04 October 2001 05:24 PM

Jeez and i thought i was the only one!! - Only last week i was having a real blast down some good fast twisties in my 300bhp scoob, when suddenly an Astra Van - being towed by 6 reindeer and being driven by an old geezer in a red Suit with a big white beard suddenly loomed up in my mirror, all of a sudden, one of the reindeer farted and the whole shebang clean lifted off the ground!! - leap frogging my scoob and disappearing into the distance - i had never seen anything go like that...All I want for Christmas is an Astra Van!!!

Miles 04 October 2001 08:33 PM

LOL.

Anyone else remember that bit on Top Gear a few years ago where Clarkson raced an Astramax against a Ferrari http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif Sitting there on a chair, drinking tea, Ferrari roars off, Clarkson casually gets off chair, gives chase to Ferrari and beats it to sixty http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Anyway, you Vauxhall-driving shower, come across to

jonnyg 04 October 2001 08:45 PM

whats the matter, scared to answer about the top speed??? or dont yah know much about your cars??

as gfor the max power mag, you are all so funny, wonder who here has got one sitting at home, you seem to know alot about them...

Aw bloody hell. P1's reduced to going to "croozes"? Residuals are bad enough....

PeteG 04 October 2001 11:53 PM

I think you got your wires crossed miles. The so-called super car was a lotus esprit and it was only on the basis of top speed. The lotus was basically slow top end, so Mr.Clarkson decided to ridicule it in the best way possible.
(or are you just trying to have a go at the VX lot again?)

LEE P 05 October 2001 01:30 AM

Err doh 141 mph? my uk scoob sails past that figure thank you very much!
