'ello all,

Which brakes are applied when using the handbrake?

After some hard brake usage I know you're not meant to clamp the brakes (ie continually apply them), but if you can't use the hand brake, or the foot brake and there's no handy bricks around (or you're on an incline at a traffic light say :) ), what to do? Change routes?

there are some small shoes inside the read disk 'drum'. it doesnt apply the normal disk brake.

there has been (including on mine!) some problems in the past (& present!) with peoples hand brakes sticking on / squealing.

the main problem I have with mine is they grab. so unless you are 100% stopped they band really badly when applied. the car also then roles backwards when you release the foot brake !

Interesting. So when the handbrake is adjusted it's actually this other "drum brake" that's wearing down. What is the general life span of a set? Any idea how often they're actually checked on servicing?

no idea as to the mileage .. should last 100k ++++ unless you hand brake turn everywhere (which will kill the centre diff, unless STI)

dont think they will ever be checked on a service. they might adjust it if they are a good garage - but doubt most do if it's ok.

mine are terrible - they stick on, squeek, rub, & vibrate like mad. :(
