I friend of mine works for a very large car manufacturer, in their testing/research dep. Today they was telling me about a test that involves running the cars at their max revs in top gear (ie, top speed) on a rolling road, and they said about the number of blow-outs they have whilst doing these tests.
The blow-outs are apparantly quite common above 150mph as the tyre gets so hot, and when they go, they let go in a big way, no warning!
It made me think of the consequences of this happening on the road, and i know a few people on this bbs do like to try their cars top speeds. It would definatly be 'Game Over!'

I know that on a rolling road there is not air rushing by to cool the tyres, like on a road, and other contributing factors are probably different, but its just something that i thought i should share with you.

Agreed, rolling road tests dont really compare with real time road conditions,and how long are they running these tyres for!!

This may be an obvious question to ask, but where the tyres blowing up at over 150mph rated to 150mph by any chance?

All tyres have a speed rating, and a tyre should NEVER be driven in excess of this rating.

There was a thread recently about this and there is other factors not just the speed rating. A tyre is rated at a speed with certain axle weight. So you could have a 150mph tyre but only if the car weighes 1000kgs. This means if you car weighes 1400kgs and you do 150mph you could be in deep trouble.

rollers are also very harsh on tyres. THe extra flex put into the tyre will heat it up, accelerating death of the tyre

i expect when youre out in the open doing 150 mph plus there will be quite a cooling effect from wind etc on tyres, which you wouldnt have in a garage with 2 big blokes sitting in the boot to keep the tyres on the rollers

One thing that no-one has mentioned is the fact that on the rollers the tyres have actually got two contact patches on the rollers, therefore they are getting much hotter than they ever would on the road.
And that means that the pressures shoot up aswell, and that just makes it even worse!!!!
