Yes I know you're all fed up of hearing race threads, but I thought I'd jsut tell you about my little race last night with a mini! Coming down A12 towards romford, A mini comes screaming past, making it obvious he wanted to play. I followed him and then he floored it. I let him go and it didn't seem all that, so when we got to the traffic lights I though't I'd blow him away. I was behind him, and we both went flat out. Thing is, I couldn't overtake him! It was the same speed as me! Three times we got lined up at the lights. Raced from every one and it stuck with me everytime. All i could do was half a car length up to 100mph!
My car = 93 WRX - 244bhp
Mini = S reg, wide arch, big wheels, twin centre exit exhaust which flamed a lot, full roll cage, possibly had a turbo although I couldn't hear properly as my car is so loud.
He was lovin it!
Watch out I say!

Metro turbo engines seem to fit into mini's quite well ;) it was probably one of those ;)

Tony:D

Fantom 08 November 2002 10:29 AM

Thats what my brother said
Very nice looking mini it was. Bet the guy is well proud, I would be.

Jolly Green Monster 2 08 November 2002 10:34 AM

I thought you were going to talk about the new cooper S (the one with the supercharger and bonnet vent) which from the one I encounted you would have no trouble leaving...

JGM :)

Fantom 08 November 2002 10:35 AM

no no, this was old shape, just highly modified!

DJ Dunk 08 November 2002 10:37 AM

Theres a black metro-turboed mini near me and it seriously shifts :D You can hear the dump valve from a mile off. Its got a sticker on the rear window that says "You've Been Mini-ed" :)

Makes me laugh as he tries to pull away from the CTR with his head bobbing up and down in the little cabin :D

gareth60 08 November 2002 10:37 AM

Cool. To get that kind of power, particually at over 100mph in a mini it top marks. Excellent.....

Gareth.

Once you've taken a hammer to the bulkhead to make room for the turbo ;)

Fantom 08 November 2002 10:43 AM

Iused to see a turbo mini down southend a lot. It was 190 bhp and used to piss off the cossie boys!

ademid 08 November 2002 10:47 AM

I've seen a dark green mini at Santa Pod that was rear wheel drive with a cossie engine shoe horned in the boot!!!

The thing was incredible it looked like a big invisible hand picked it up and threw it down the runway!!! Best part of the day was watching it out do a Diablo down the strip!!:D:D

So beware that could upset most scoobs. I loved it though:D:D:D:D

Probably a 2 ltr honda vtec engined one. I had a go in one once and they are seriously quick.

Nice to see though. Respect due.

mista weava 08 November 2002 10:53 AM

nitrous seems to be popular in mini circles at the moment - mate of mine has a kit for his - evil

Fantom 08 November 2002 10:56 AM

I think I'd still prefer the legroom I get in my scooby though ;)
I'm 6'5 :o

jasonwrxowner 08 November 2002 11:04 AM

Fantom.......You are 6' 5" and still owe me a coffee.

:D

Scoob99 08 November 2002 11:08 AM

My son as a mini (It's for sale if anyone is intrested), 1380cc goes like stink, it's as quick as my scoob up to around 90mph, it's a grear little pocket rocket.
Cheers
Colin

Fantom 08 November 2002 11:08 AM

yeah yeah ;)
You will just have to wait! :p

ian_sadler 08 November 2002 11:20 AM

Like J says could be a type R

Saw on at boxhill a few weeks, very nice ..... very quick.

The bloke had to have the engine bay and bonnet lengthened about 5" though :D

Metro Turbo engines in Mini's are a bit old hat now. The thing to do now is to use the Vauxhall 2 litre engine or as mentioned above one of the Honda VTEC units.

Currently building my brothers spaceframed rallycross mini and we used to use a 1380 A series engine which put out 135BHP. Engine was a total pain in the @rse as you had to use warm up spark plugs and the thing wouldn't idle properly because of the scatter cam.

Now we have bought the VTEC kit from Watsons rally and have got hold of a Jap Import Honda Civic SiR II. 170BHP for a completely standard road engine is pretty impressive so we are just going to use it as standard for now (Engine has done 70,000 miles and we drove it the 100 miles home!) and maybe change the cams and valvesprings for Type R versions at a latter date.

Considering how much money people are spending on the Vauxhall 1.6 engine (upto £2000 for a steel crank alone!!) to get 200+ BHP out of it I am very interested to see how a completely standard 1600 VTEC will compare.

red_dog104 08 November 2002 11:28 AM

Had a similar experience with a mini the other day! Bloke had a grin like a cheshire cat when we stopped next to each other! I was impressed I have to say. I was also a tad worried that something was wrong with my car!!!

ADP 08 November 2002 11:33 AM

Did you know some guy put an integra type R engine in a mini, and on the back it just had mini and the type r badge. It was in car and car conversions, obviously went like sh1te of a shuvel

Fantom 08 November 2002 11:40 AM

oh my god ADP
Was it blue?
Cos I'm sure I remember seeing a type R badge on the back!

Scoobybits 08 November 2002 11:45 AM

type r?more like type RUST,!!!!!!!!doesn't matter what you do to em they are still rot boxes!!

Fantom 08 November 2002 11:48 AM

It was an S reg. As in NEW. And it was mint, so I believe you are wrong. :p

Fantom 08 November 2002 11:50 AM

NEW(ish)

Scoobybits 08 November 2002 11:58 AM

bet its got more test failure sheets than a full fleet of ex council vans going for the first test!and i dont know what the weather is like down there, but if its as grim elsewhere as it has been here all week and the roads are wet and you still can't out drag a 2wd mini in a scooby you ought to be driving miss daisy in the next film!! mini's=slow ,old, cramped, and usually RUSTY!!.... ,so is your scooby for sale?are you trading it for a mini rose,or park lane,or even a mini racing!!wow??ha ha ha ha

Fantom 08 November 2002 12:03 PM

Actually mate, I'd rather have my scooby than any mini.
Secondly, the mini WASN'T slow, so you need to accept that some people can make them go extremely fast. Have you been ignoring the other posts people have made??

Fantom 08 November 2002 12:04 PM

oh, and the 4wd is where I got my "half a car length" from

Scoobybits 08 November 2002 12:13 PM

no mate have seen other posts and saw first hand the before mentioned mini at santa pod which was rear engined( it was an rsturbo though not a cossie!)and found it funny to see it waste a diablo??.still say you should of had i'm though there is a scooby reputation to maintain you know! and i will be the first to say never under esstimate any car thats beeen modified,my brother runs a fiesta turbo which wasted(amongst many more victims) a tvr chimera at york earlier this year,(fiesta rs turbo now for sale, any takers mail me £15k's reciepts etc,its to be replaced by wait for it rs focus??
next time you meet mini man just make sure you win!!

Fantom 08 November 2002 12:16 PM

ha ha ha
Well I did try.............
And he didn't beat me.......
I do feel that 244bhp is not enough........

Scoobybits 08 November 2002 12:20 PM

yeah look on the bright side now you have an excuse to modify!
