Can anyone tell me what the foam insert in the engine undertray is for. Mine is oil soaked and becoming a health hazard ... do I need it ... if so what is a good replacement?

I would have thought purely for noise deadening......the early cars did'nt have an undertray at all - so you could dispense with it altogether if its that bad I suppose.

I have a spare undertray if you need it!!
It's used, but NOT soaked in oil. Came off an RB5:)

it is to stop small stones lying on the guard,in case you ever ground the car allowing the small stone to puncture your sump  .

Sound like I ought to replace it ... anyone know where to get this heat resistant foam?

HELLOM8 01 November 2002 01:36 PM

Not sure where you get the foam from, can you remove the guard and clean the foam?, maybe try a dealer (Subaru that is).
The guard also stops the heat shield from getting wet and getting fragile to the point of an annoying buzzing sound.
Cheers.
Ian.
