It could also be the oil cooler oil seal, i changed mine but its still leaking so i recon it is the front crank shaft oil seal on mine, not cheap to fix..!!!

The oil cooler oil seal can be bought from www.grahamgoode.com

I once had a horrendous oil leak on the way back from London, went though 4 to 5 litres of oil though the journey, forget, but buying 1 litre at a time at each of the services en route made it a very expensive journey.

Oil was pi$$ing out of the covers. Left a slick in the wet car park at Reading services. Guy in BWM moved his car cos of the smoke!! Car had not long before had belts and seals replaced.

Rightly or wrongly, I was told that there is a plate over ( or behind ) the oil pump which is accessed through the cam belt covers. This plate is held in place by three screws, two had come loose and oil was bypassing the retaining plate into the covers.

Garage told me they had only seen it happen once or twice before.

Maybe I was conned, dunno......

Edited to say - my car is a Sport, had approx 100k miles on the clock then (120k now)

Appears to be coming from round the cambelt cover so will the cambelt be contaminated and need changing as well

Thanks...

Yes it will :(. I had a front crankshaft oil seal leak and was told once the belt comes off it should be replaced cause it's most likely contaminated. Not cheap, unless you get it done under warranty like I did :)

If the oil is leaking from behind the cambelt cover has it got to be the front crank seal or is there anything else it could be.

I don't think there is anything else it could be..

Mine did the same at 100k.. how many has yours done?

I was told it should have been changed as a precaution with the cambelt at 90k..

Cost me 300notes.. or which belt was 105..

Was first told 500 until I shopped around and pointed out that the cambelt service at 45k is only about 450.. so to change cambelt and a small rubber seal for more than that is taking the p1ss..

MY96 Uk Turbo BTW..
