ok, im about to take a 100k pa pay cut so "see ya" scoob!
i will soon need a car for about 10k that will not look a disgrace when i turn up at clients houses. clients are wealthy but all old money so they drive claped out old cars but have lots of cash! in otherwords they dont expect me to drive a flash BM (in fact would prob not like that) but equally might wonder about my future if i drove a fiesta! ive been thinking maybe a SAAB- not look at me like bm/merc but not cheap like ford/vaux. or maybe a volvo? anyone drive something similar i should consider? or know which are good depriciaton cars that i can pay 10k for and get something that looks 20K ! T |
Subaru Legacy Estate has respect in those circles, but not in Mustard Mica (cough!) :-) Just a thought!

£100k pa pay cut!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And you only drove a scooby!!!! If I took that sort of pay cut I'd owe the government over £75k a year :D |
Tiggs,
I guess this is really more about image projection. I don't know how old you are but maybe a Saab Estate would suit you ? 10K should get you one a few years old and I think they have a 'professional' image, if you know what I mean. Wouldn't get a Volvo though, no quite the image you are after IMHO. Understated but still quality is the kind of thing you would need. P.S. How is the kite buggy stuff going ? No broken bones yet ? ;) Cheers Ian |
If I got a 100k pay RISE I might keep the Scoob. I could just about keep smiling as I pour £130+ a week into its tank then.

ian, im 28- i like the saab esate idea- its almost a car with no negative image probs at all.
kite buggying is cool! am now using predator race kites so going REAL quick! T ps- without starting a huge debate ;) maybe the fact i ran a 20k car on 120k pa should be a lesson to the boys who run P1's on no money then bombared Non Scoob with questions about debt consolidation and loans! hope fully my new biz is up and running soon so money back to normal after a few years but i would NEVER run a car costing more than 25% of my income unless i had to. |
Tiggs
Depends what you're going to use it for. Suggest a high power Saab 9-5 2.3. That puts out 250 bhp, and the car, although no Scoob, is an exceptionally good cruiser, and surprisingly nimble. Estates are harder to come by, but you'd get a 99/00 car with 70-80k miles on it (most Saabs have a load of miles on, but they wear it well) for £9k privately, or £10.5k from a dealer. They've done the bulk of the depreciating by then, so use it for 2 years, stick 40k miles on, sell it for £6-7k and you've had (relatively) cheap motoring, in serious comfort. bros |
Buy an M3 Evo E36 !
|
May I suggest a Porsche 944?
|
A skoda :D
|
Quality,
How to piss people off..............."I am taking a 100k paycut" ;) |
What the hell did you do to earn that sort of money, if you don't mind me asking?
|
Audi A4 Avant
older ones come in at around 9 - 10K, and with the audi build quality they're as good as a new one. The image is probably what you're after - quality without flash what do i win ? :) |
going to check some audios and saabs today!
cheers ppl T ps- i was/am/still will be a financial adviser (not your normal "want a mortgage" one though) |
Only problem with Saabs is they're FWD. OTOH there are quite a few Quattro Audi Avants around.
|
How about this from the for sale section??

Why not buy an old classic.
I'm running around in an Alfa Spider [1990]. People won't know what to make of you in that. Don't buy a big Merc with a small engine. Had a fully loaded 230CE for a while. You really need the 6 cylinder engine, much smoother and less effort. |
Running costs of Saabs can be very pricey (main dealer).
How about a VW Passat. Cheap to buy and run (relatively) but quality is acceptable. 'Sensible' image, but perhaps too mass market for your requirements? |
If you want something that doesnt scream money then I reckon you wont go far wrong with a Volvo T5 estate. All your clients will geton with that.
|
well, If I had to take a pay cut, I'd junk the predator and get a blade II.
that will sort out the men from the boys now ;) |
Integra Type R
|
Passat 4motion or Audi A6 are both good plans...
A6 is respectably priced (similar to A4 prices) and IMHO a nicer car. Saab and Volvo estates both sound like they fit the bill but shouldn't you be looking for a sub £5k car based on your rules ;) (which by the way I agree with! I've never financed a car either - don't feel comfortable with that - so only buy what I can afford to in cash!) |
"but i would NEVER run a car costing more than 25% of my income unless i had to. "
in this case i HAVE to! (just for a while, ....i hope) T |
Why not just get a cheaper Scoob ?
|
i have grown to dislike the image of scoobs- partcualy cheaper ones- sorry!
|
what about an E34 M5 - a bit pricey for the age of car (early 90s) but still fits under the 10k limit.
IMHO they don't look as 'wide' as some of the other fast BMWs. The understated, tasteful option might be an Audi A4 or a Passat... Nick |
How about 275 Maestros,Montegos and Metros ?
|
*lol* Not sure a Meastro would fit the bill :D
My neighbour runs a recreuitment business from home, he drives round in a Volver C70 T5 or something, but used to have a V40 estate which looked quite smart in black :) |
