-   -   Shell Optimax Prices: WTF? (https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-general-1/144218-shell-optimax-prices-wtf.html)

Dan B 25 October 2002 11:40 AM

There are several Shell garages around where I work. The closest one is in Smallford, just outside of St Albans. Its optimax is at 79.9. If I then go to the shell Garage at Chiswell Green optimax is 78.9, or even less on some occasions.

Is the Smallford garage having a laugh? or can the individual garages charge what they like?

scoob_dood 25 October 2002 11:55 AM

In Cambridge all the garages that I use have Optmax in at 79.9 .. travel down to London, and the Upper Street (N1) Garage has it for 74.9 (iirc) but certainly cheaper.

Twickenham and Isleworth Shell optimax is 79.9p the one on the A316 just past Hanworth charge more but I guess thats coz they are 24hr and ripp you off on everything anyway.

Dan - there's another Shell at Marshallswick (coming from Hatfield turn right at Smallford roundabout, straight on until t/lights, then right again). It was 77.9 in there a couple of weeks ago. Might have gone up since though.

WTF you are moaning about, that is 50 pence per tankful difference you tight git!

BTW that equates to about 4.9 miles of normal driving in a subaru.

SiPie 25 October 2002 12:27 PM

50p per tankfull....

for me a tankfull every 2 to 3 days :(

£91.25 per year :(

Even at that I agree he's a tight get :D

CharlieWhiskey 25 October 2002 12:36 PM

I have seen it for various prices around Derbyshire & Staffordshire over the last few weeks at anything from 74.9:D to 79.9:(!

As it is not shown on the main prices signs I guess you have to know where to look:rolleyes:

It is anything between 2p and 6p more than the Unleaded price so that is no guarantee! The proximity of other petrol stations selling SUL is normally a good sign though!

Chrisgr31 25 October 2002 12:46 PM

Petrol price vary wildly and it tends to be related to competition. When the supermarkets first started selling petrol then the prices near them dropped, however I think that Sainsbury and Tesco have stopped doing such good deals on fuel. I do know that Optimax is cheap at Northfleet, but their is an Asda station not too far away. Optimax in Northfleet is 76.9, and everywhere else I see is 79.9.

Chris

ps Anyone want to let me have --CE or LOS ______ on the Air Miles scratch cards :D

Dark Blue Mark 25 October 2002 12:50 PM

There's one in Wafrord, cheapest in the country!

MB :)

Gordo 25 October 2002 12:51 PM

They can charge what they like. Many are franchised outlets with all pricing under the control of the franchise manager. It is very much driven by the market and local competition.

Stop moaning!

SUL where I am is 84.9p a litre!

Robbing cnuts

SlowBoy 25 October 2002 12:56 PM

Dunstable and Nothampton are usually 2p cheaper than where I am in W London. Didn't use to make any difference to me, but that was before the scoob. :)

Dave T-S 25 October 2002 01:50 PM

Pah!!

The (one and only) time I used the Shell garage on the A505 between Royston and Baldock, it was 92 point something pence a litre!!!!

Baby Blue 25 October 2002 01:53 PM

Has been 76.9 in Nottingham for months!

BB

scoobynutta555 25 October 2002 01:55 PM

go to shell at dome roundabout in Watford its 76.9 i think

swan 25 October 2002 01:58 PM

I can't even get any! Unless you count the 102.6 at the local track which will only pump it into drums, if you have a racing licence. And go there for the 4 hours a week that they open the pumps. And you get there before the weekly quota is used up.

In summary, be happy you get it in the first place!

Dan B 25 October 2002 02:01 PM

Tight fisted git

(I'm taking the bait here)

a) its my money, and if I'm being ripped off and am happy for it to continue, that (IMHO) makes me an idiot.
b) its the principle.

Cheers Debs, that one at Marshallswick is only another 5mins down the road. might give that one ago. Can't be arse to go to Chiswell green everytime

IFG 25 October 2002 02:02 PM

Dave T is right (though not quite 92p). I paid 84.9p / litre on the A505 last Sunday evening. If the company hadn't been paying for it I'd have put the pump back on the hook before filling up and gone elsewhere.

If Shell are anything like BP they have a retail pricing system that maps all other competition garages within a certain radius (2 miles for BP if I remember rightly). They then check the prices against the competition daily and make sure they are competitive.

Moral of the story is find an area where there are lots of stations within a small area.

marty_t3 25 October 2002 02:10 PM

Paid 76.9p a litre for optimax in Halifax today. Think i saved myself a good 21p worth on that half a tank.

davyboy 25 October 2002 02:12 PM

A whole 21 pence........cool! ;)

BarryK 25 October 2002 02:20 PM

Optimax 77.9ppl in Bailiff Bridge between Bradford and Brighouse. Same price at Waterhead on A62 out of Oldham.

If you are a Southern Shandy drinker, don't read the first bit. :)

PiNkEyE69 25 October 2002 02:23 PM

I can beat that!
One Shell station in Basingstoke was selling Optimax at 78.9 and the other at 79.9 - and these 2 are 5 minutes (or less - town roads) drive apart

Dave T-S 25 October 2002 02:40 PM

IFG
I was paying and didn't notice until I had filled it up - bugger!;)
