Hi all, i know this really should go on a sunny gtir page but i know there are a few of u on here with them so i thought i would ask her....

My mates bro's gti-r wont go into gear when the engine is on, could it be the clutch cable as the clutch was changed about a year ago??

If so is it easy to change??

The gtir has a hydrolic clutch mechanism check the fluid level if its low his clutch master cylinder could be leaking check where the clutch pedal where it goes into the master cylinder inside the car under the dash is there fluid coming out from this area, also the area below the pedal is usually wet with fluid where it drips down. Also the rubberpipe that goes to the slave cylinder also leaks somtimes.

I had the same problem - due to low, make that no clutch fluid. Check the levels and top it up.

Spoken to the speciallist and they seem to think the clutch is cooked, £330 labour and 130 clutch..owchhhhhhh

Also had a search for hydolic fluid on pedal/floor but none there!.. checked what i thought is the resovoir (just abouve the break resovoir) and it looks ok.

i think its a garage problem now, its not my car thank god and i bet hes going to get a big bill!

try a few more specialists first mate,see if you can get a better price,try Hi-teq,or d.p. motorsport,

IF it needs a new clutch then £330 labour and 130 clutch is not too bad I think (I'm looking to buy a GTI-R myself and am well aware of these car's clutches being fairly weak) : at least the gearbox will need to come out but it seems that a lot of people remove the engine + box in a oner as just removing the box is more of a hassle. Also might be a thought to consider whether the box itself needs attention as these are also a weak point with selector forks and synchros needing replaced on many people's cars and if this occurs with your mates car in 6 months time and the box needs to come out again then doing this job along with the clutch now might save money and hassle further down the line.

There has also been cases of the clutch fork breaking/bending which gives the same symtoms.And yes £330 labour and £130 clutch is a pretty good price just don't take it to nissans!!

I used to have a GTI-R and used Graham at GDA for all the servicing - knows what he's doing and prices are pretty good. They take only the g/box out so they don't have to regas the aircon (saves about £100). Price sounds about right.

My clutch master cylinder sprang a leak and lost most of the fluid - as said, you'll find a pool of it on the floor if it's completely fubar'd.

Its not the clutch, apparently some plate outside the gearbox was welded before and now has snapped. its about £80 whatever it was.
