Bought a MY97 last week with 98,000 on the clock.
When I start it first thing from cold there is a rumbling/rattling from the center of the engine.

Deffo not from either of the heads, it comes from underneath the inlet manifold, oil level is fine but hasn't been changed for 8,000 miles(last Subaru service)
Once the engine is warm there is no noise at all!

Is this normal?
Please don't tell me it is the dreaded death rattle:(

Does it go away when you put your foot on the clutch?.......

A

dave_the_B 20 October 2002 11:02 PM

No.

Quick search has found PISTON SLAP!!!!
Deep joy!!??

I'm now stuck between going back to the dealer who sold it me and asking for my money back or, as it is 98k old, keep it/enjoy it but change the oil more often.

Your thoughts please:)

Piston Slap?
Isn't that something you do with the missus behind closed doors?
:D

Try and get your money back first.
If not bottom end rebuild would be worth looking into.
Would be able to get another 90k or so miles out of it!
depends on cost and what spec you build to, standard or uprated.
Thinking of doing this to mine in the near future(peace of mind.
