I am a self employed engineer in Liverpool. I do a little work for the Jag factory (Halewood). Over the years i have made a few friend there and i get to hear alsorts of things. Ford are pissed of with Honda ref the type "R". I own one of these "Rice rockets" and i gave one of the Jag guys a go in it. He just couldn't belive how quick it was next to his ST 170.

Whats got them going however is that while Testing a RS here in Blighty every Scooby for miles around came up to have ago. I belive that a number of them totally pissed the Ford.

Aiming but missing. FWD won't tempt many Scoobie boys/girls from their current steed.

Obviously all modern touring cars must handle crap then as they are all FWD and wouldn't get near a scoob round the twisties. LOL dream on those type R things have about as much grunt as a moped plus they look silly . A melon in a yellow civic tried it on with me the other day And I couldn't believe how slow and cack it handled it was swaying all over the shop what a gay car.
The RS is better than the WRX face it and how many people are going to be tempted by a group 16 insurance and cheaper running costs and better residuals . As they say a fool and his money etc etc And at the moment you would have to be a fool to buy a new scoob

For some strange reason i agree with you. Most folk i know who are into their cars used to be gagging to get their hands on a WRX. Nowadays they're looking to the type-R.

If i had the money to buy a new car now... it wouldn't be the scoob. (just the opinon of this WRX owner)

just a thought ,is the R.S to sold in japan?.and do they import old cosworths etc, like we do with any jap car here.

I couldnt tell you about Japan but I can tell you about Hong Kong which is similar. Ford do sell cars here, as do Peugeut, Saab, Mercedes, Jaguar,Lotus, BMW, Porshe and a load of other european cars. Except for top cars such as the porshes and the mercs, european cars are looked down upon as being pretty crap. They are less reliable than jap cars and their air-cons cannot handle the tropical heat as well. Also, parts are harder to get. Second hand european cars go for next to nothing 'cos no-one wants them. I was recently offered a '93 Saab for free!
There are a few cossies out here and its an 'unusual' car to have (skylines, WRX's , Evo's and Type-R's are common) but they still maintain pretty good value due to collectability but a risky car to buy due to part shortages.
I doubt I will be seeing any ST's around here.

Do you think they make jokes in Japan about import Cossies that have been previously smashed into a bus shelter in Manchester by someone called Wayne, then badly repaired, clocked and shipped to Japan to start a new life for double the price it was worth in the country of origin?

And Wayne had a mullet and whispy 'tash, wore a shellsuit and had a whiff of BO about him.

The question was asked of a Ford Japan person once...the answer was an honest, "What's that?"

Since the first Focuses over here were all 1.6 autos (and they wonder why they can't sell'em? :rolleyes: ), and the 2.5 Mondeo is a fairly recent addition (forget ST models - blank looks regarding that too) it'd be a miracle if it made it here (although it'd be nice to see for variety).

I thought they had to scrap car in japan once they'd reached 6 years old????? Therefore depreciation isn't so much of an issue so spending loads extra on a european car isn't as good value here where they may hold their value better.

I think you would be surprised how fast the new ones are to 100.....would keep up with a unmodified escort cosworth

I very doubt that a small block normally aspirated car would get the legs on a turbo charged 2.0 really down to torque more than anything else.
The one i saw was deinitely yellow and if wasn't a type R it was a damn good replica. It was slow whatever it was and wobbled alot

look at the performance stats 0 - 100 mph in EVO magazine

Impreza WRX 18.3 secs turbo
Civic Type-R 16.9 secs normally aspirated VTEC
Integra Type-R 16.7 secs normally aspirated VTEC

I've owned a WRX and driven both type-r's and I reckon the type-rs were faster above 60 heading towards 100!

S2000..'normally aspirated' engine 0 - 60 5.2 sec 0 - 100 14.4 sec

I don't know many other non-turbo cars that will do 60 in just over 5 seconds.

Honda make fantastic engines....I love scoobs/escorts cossies but I am not going to sit here and slag off other great motors just becos I own a cosworth/WRX....you should perhaps open your mind to beyond just turbo's and bhp

I think that the Type R engines are great but not alot of go if they are not revving and can be a bit of a pain on the road from my experience. I really like the accord a nice car. Honda do make quality engines there is no doubt of that and type R's offer amazing performance for their repective engines.

CTRs come in red, silver or black only (if uk cars). White in Japan too.

So you were probably trying on with a 1.4 or something....

also Horses for courses really - some peoples idea of fun, spirited and involving driving will involve keeping it on the boil, changing down etc.....

Just cos the driving style may be different to what you like/are used to, doesnt necessarily mean that it is any worse, or that the reults wont be rapid.

Being normally aspirated they seem to have more poke lower down the rev range than a turbo'd car. Admittedly the VTEC takes a while longer to kick in (6k as opposed to 4k on a scoob) but then you can redline at over 8k (9k in the S2000 IIRC).

My ITR would hit 9.5K before red lining, and my CTR is about 9.... and in the various situations where I have had little scurmishes with such turbo charged cars, and the type r's hold there own big style, even shocked a few people I'd say.

was it the shape b4 the current model??? it could well b a Jordan, limited edition vtec with yellow paint and mtching leather interior

I have a new wrx and a honda crx SiR... totally different to drive.. The Honda is only 1.6 and can no way keep up with the initial turbo surge but it does move along nicely when you give it plenty and I do mean plenty of revs.. Love them both.. probably the crx is more fun as the handling requires a little more driver input...

Yes i must be honest here, the CTR does require you to be in the right "Mood". I wouldn't be too bent on perfamance figs here, getting an "R" away from the lights on a wet road is not as easy as say a turbo or V6.

Still it is fun most of the time.

I have to agree with Ducati, I have had a Type-R Integra till recently, and it was awesome, especially in terms of handling and brakes. Mullered a standard MY97 scoob around Oulton Park. And a 240 bhp S3 around Donington. My own MY97 was about the same midrange, but obviously faster off the line, and better in the wet.
