Question 1: Is it a worthwile upgrade given I'm running 1.25 bar on a TD04L

Question 2: How much would you expect to pay for a second hand good condition STI V intercooler

Question 3: Is is pretty much a straight swap in terms of fitting

mega_stream 17 October 2002 11:23 AM

Answer 1: I think mine was, got the Sti Pipework on mine aswell. Gave me an extra 0.1 bar of boost.

Question 2: I got mime for nothing :D , dunno, £125??

Question 3: Yes straight swap, consider doing the pipework underneath while your at it though, the stock rigid black plastic one is pants.

Good post Saxo Boy!! :)

I have been thinking about getting one too.

I shall have to keep checking in on this one.

oh yea, BTTT.

Floyd 17 October 2002 12:59 PM

They don't look that much bigger IMHO, but the pipework is a must.

I thought that silver didn't conduct the heat as well as black either?

Never mind the size, feel the width ;)

I thought that too, the don't look much bigger. Does anyone know a rough % for how much better they are at reducing temps?

LG John 17 October 2002 01:55 PM

I'm suprised at the lack of interest/response to this thread. I was under the impression that this was a fairly common and well regarded upgrade....am I wrong?

mega_stream 17 October 2002 02:18 PM

Yes, most people that upgrade IC's go to FMIC's

Nezz10 17 October 2002 03:19 PM

But they cost s**t load more than getting a second hand STI-V one.

mega_stream 17 October 2002 03:26 PM

TBH I think if you drove identical cars, one with a standard IC and one with an STi one you probably wouldn't notice the difference from this part alone.

But its the colaboration of bits, decat, filter, v5 Intercooler, ECU, that all work hand in hand to improve things :)

Devil's Refugee 17 October 2002 05:01 PM

Saxo,

The work on my car is nearing completion mate, so I can let you know what kind of difference it makes (although the one I'm getting fitted is larger still)

But let's just say, the standard UK TMIC (although holed in my case  ) is a pretty poor compromise for any IC IMHO.

The STI model is larger, and you may be able to pick one up for about £250 on a couple of sites like Midland Impreza (and there's another but for the life of me can't remember just now :( )

LG John 17 October 2002 05:28 PM

Using your car as a gauge won't really help theo as there is the matter of that big feck off turbo your adding at the same time :D

TBMeech 17 October 2002 05:38 PM

I believe that:

1) Std UK Turbo TMIC versus STI-V TMIC, the STI one has a better core and therefore more cooling potential than the UK one so, the answer to your question is yes it's a worthwhile mod only if you cannot afford a FMIC.

2) Price wise I think for a good example on the bbs expect to pay circa £200ish, Breaker will charge prob £250+

3) Depends on your MY, if your car is MY99/00 then it will be a straight swap over, shouldnt take more than 30-40 mins if you are capable with spanners.

madou 17 October 2002 06:19 PM

1. Yes. Do not have inlet temp probe, but did help when mapping.
2. c. £250 for good condition with metal 'Y' inlet pipe
3. Straightforward, you have MY99

Moles Dad 17 October 2002 06:59 PM

IIRC there have been many of 'the lads' using uprated TMIC and running 300 plus bhp :D

I have a FMIC and cant even manage 300 :(

LG John 17 October 2002 07:02 PM

The glorified airbed pump may have something to do with that ;):D

Moles Dad 17 October 2002 08:31 PM

LOL...me thinks you are right :)

They dont do too bad for an ol' uk!

When I have sold my dog, my patio doors and anything else I can imagine (not my 4rse:D) I will head down to the hybrid shop :D
