I'm running very low boost lately (0.5) to try and save petrol as I'm having to comute further. I know it has a small tank and I always use Optimax, but what kind of fuel consumption are you other guys getting? I'm worried it may be running too rich.
I think the best ever was 180 miles to a full tank, I think they have 50 lit tanks, is 14-20 mpg about normal? I preumed if I reduced the boost and the heavy right foot that it would use far less fuel, but no, or is this a trait of the car? Thanks |
Normal especially around town. I usually get between 16-18mpg in a MY99, driven hard. It should increase to anywhere from 25-30mpg with motorway miles though.

Deano, Mine is pretty much the same.... drinks petrol all the time but even worse if you thrash it. Not cheap cars to run.
I did a trip to Scotland a few weeks ago and got 190 or so motorway miles from the tank driving at normal fast lane speeds. I did the return trip and made the whole 220 motorway miles on one tank with some fuel to spare. I was driving about 5 mph slower on the way home but i didn't think it'd make that much of a difference. |
Not sure if you are working out your consumption properly. Even with the guage sitting almost on the E there will still be 5 litres or so left in the tank.
The best way to measure is to brim the tank, reset trip counter. Then next time you stop for fuel brim the tank again. The amount you need to put in will give a much more accurate idea of the amount you have used. (About 4.54l / gallon). I get 220 - 230 miles (27ish MPG) from my '93 WRX. Most often open road commuting change up at 4000 type stuff. Even booting it in Wales I still got 23-24MPG. If you are not doing too much stop start stuff less than 20MPG sounds like you have got a problem. |
Yup, even driving like Miss Daisy (ie. .5 bar and almost never over 3k rpm) I got punishing fuel consumption figures. May as well use the car well as the saving IMO isn't worth the frustration. If you want good fuel consumption get a 1l city car. :)

Maybe replace lambda sensor too - if it's reading low then your closed loop fuelling will be excessively rich.

I did fit a Dawes AFR, it showed pretty much I was running rich on high boost, which I guess is better than it running lean.
I'm going to fill it up to the top and drive like a Grandad to see if I can get anywhere near 180 miles to a tank, as it once did. Ta |
Is it actually a "full tank" as mine seems to do about 200 miles down to the last mark on the guage but I can only get about 30 litres into the tank before the pump shuts off. I can get about 300 miles on the motorway if I take it easy but the petrol guage is very inacurate. Just an observation :)
|
I had 330 to a tank on a trip from the cotswolds to north yorkshire sitting around 85 mark (with a couple of a-road blasts thrown in for good measure!!!)
Mind you the fuel needle was below the E when i filled up :rolleyes: All this on Optimax and running peak held boost of 17.5psi on my UK 97 [Edited by iain atkins - 10/16/2002 2:37:10 PM] |
Do the Uk turbo models have a bigger fuel tank than the early Jap Imports?
|
Ive got an MY93 wrx, and i get around 330kms with sensible driving, using Optimax..... doing anything over 75mph, motorway driving takes that to about 290kms ...thats on a full tank.
In mpg.. i think averaging 26mpg is fair on a tank full, but like others, that can drop to under 20 when you drive it as its meant to be. The best ive ever had was an average of 29.2mpg ... that was all motorway, and not doing over 65mph. |
Forgot to add, im running a no mod's wrx, full boosts @ 0.75bar.
I've got an Sti backbox but cant see that doing much to economy/performance on its own.. |
Five0 I dont know how youre working out your MPG, but from what youve said, youre getting more like 23mpg :)
for example 230 * 4.5461 / ~45litres ~ 23mpg :) correct me if im wrong? :) |
Erm, am I the only one that can do 350 miles on a tank here?
With my legacy on the original ECU. Edited to add I have a 60L tank. Uprated ecu with 16psi or so of boost and richer low down still gets me 300 miles per tank. I would open the ECU and check it for an aftermarket chip, as they do tend to come from japan with them from time to time. Paul [Edited by Pavlo - 10/16/2002 6:05:29 PM] |
I'm same as you, Pavlo - on a long journey, I have seen 34mpg; 30mpg usual if I'm out of town, but down to about 24 if sitting in traffic watching buses clog my lane as well as their own :)
