I used to get that on my 01WRX, sounded like it was in the passenger footwell, or behind the dash-glovebox. It made more of a running water sound in mine never asked as i thought i was going a bit mad :). Don't get it in an 02 though wonder why? .

Beemer_Deano 11 October 2002 01:59 AM

Hi,

No help I'm afraid - but my MY01 does that too.... I thought I'd left the window open and filled the car with rain the first time.

I'll get the dealer to take a look at the next service.

Cheers,

Deano

I get it too! I'd say its a bit more "mechanical" in sound, but can be described as running water... Sounds like its coming from the passenger airbag area.

Any ideas?

ed_the_duck 11 October 2002 02:47 AM

yup, i get it too!! and it was not there when i first got the car (my00 uk) and it happens when started and goes after a while, souds just like running water through a pipe......well i thought it mabe fuel being pulled through but if that where the case then it sounds like bucket loads......(mind it doed drink it) or could be water pumping round in the sytem (not sure if there is a heater rad)when water gets hot i spose it expands and takes up the excess areas inside the system.....but im on the dole so what would i know!....could be air in the system perhaps but im no mechanic so it could be a little gremlin 'avin a laugh:D

MurrayZA 11 October 2002 06:09 AM

01 WRX - and I get it too. Didnt have the running water when
I first got the car, then I had the running water sound, now
its gone. It may have only been coincidence, but it
disappeared after I topperd up the raditor water level. I'd like
to know what really causes it.

On mine I occasionally get a rushing noise of water (even without nervous passengers). It's the power steering fluid on mine, which on the MY00 is on the driver's side.

Could it be that? Might be worth a look to see where the reservoir is on MY01+?

Toerag 11 October 2002 02:49 PM

Top your rad up, that's what my dealer did on my old forester with the noise, and it appeared to cure it.
I wish the fecking juddery clutch was that easy to fix!!

johnfelstead 11 October 2002 03:26 PM

you sure you dont have water in your eardrums after a shower? :D

clintyboy12 11 October 2002 03:39 PM

I have a MY00 and I have noticed that type of noise. Doesn't happen all the time but usually happens just after the beast has been started up (not necessarily just from cold).
I will check the power steering reservoir but was also wondering whether it could be anything to do with the aircon. Do any of you other guys with this "problem" have aircon as well?
Difficult thing to take back to the dealer because sod's law it won't occur when they take a look at it - it is fairly intermittent and disappears after bliping the throttle a couple of times.

Chris

MurrayZA 11 October 2002 03:56 PM

Clint - see if you can diagnose it properly for us.
Top up the rad and leave it for a week.
If the noise persists, then try power steering fluid,
then leave it for a week. See if you can pinpoint the hasstle.

I have this every now and again. Check your coolant levels. If low top it up and it should go away. It does on mine anywayz.

On a side note what is the coolant for, I'm guessing one function is to stop things freezing in the winter and what damage can/ could be caused by letting the levels go way too low?

Anthony

btw the car is a MY 98 and has no air con.

Avi 11 October 2002 04:09 PM

My MY98 Sport does it too, Coolant was topped up at service and still does it. Only notice it from cold tho' :)

TonyBurns 11 October 2002 04:10 PM

Isnt it the fuel pump? ;)

Tony:D

Fat Boy Slim 11 October 2002 04:32 PM

I get it too, bloody funny noise:) Is it anything to do with the AC just my 2 pence worth.

Not doing any harm so will not go hunting for a cause.

johnfelstead 11 October 2002 05:06 PM

didnt when i had it andy? i wish i knew what you are talking about.

Fulham71 11 October 2002 06:24 PM

I get it on my My 01 too !

bruce 11 October 2002 06:28 PM

I get this too on my MY97WRX, havent managed to fix it yet, but have checked coolant levels and not noticed any low readings.

GrantF 11 October 2002 08:27 PM

It may also be worth checking that the sill drains are clear. I had similar symptoms and after clearing the three sill drains, front, mid. and rear with something like a short, thin screwdriver the problem disapeared with the two litres of water.

Rusty Festa 11 October 2002 09:44 PM

LOL - glad I'm not the only one :D

I get this in my MY00 Sport - thought it was just the condensation being pushed out of my exhaust

Rusty Festa 11 October 2002 09:45 PM

seems to disappear when I get to the end of the road, just as I go round the ...

ustolemyname??stevieturbo 11 October 2002 10:10 PM

Think they pretty much all do it. But WHO CARES??????? If the water was running down your leg, then it might be something to worry about.

wildp 12 October 2002 07:47 AM

I too used to get this noise after starting the car from cold. I'm pretty sure that it's air trapped in the heater matrix. It was a sure indicator that the coolant level needed topping up. The problem increased in frequency until my local dealer identified a slow leak in the radiator which was changed under the warrantee.

turbo wrx 12 October 2002 09:35 AM

I too had the running water noise when I had a MY97. It never did this until I had a front end smash and they replaced the radiator when it was in the body shop. It only did it when it was started from cold, and was more noticable if you lightly blipped the throttle whilst waiting in trafic. After 5 mins or so it would disappear entirely. I too think it was air in the cooling/heater system, although I never got the bottom of it before I got rid of it. By the way my car did not have air con so I know its nothing to do with that. Never had this trouble in my MY01!

skins1980 18 December 2007 12:33 PM

ive got this problem in my 99 liberty...would love to know what it is.have noticed the coolant has needed topping up.will se how it goes now

scoobyboy 18 December 2007 12:58 PM

the noise is from the heater matrix and usually appears after a coolant change or any work that requires the cooling system to be drained it is a snot to get rid of as it's air trapped in the matrix, and if you look at the heater pipes they go down rather than up. sometimes it works it's way out but not often but to you can get rid of it by removing the heater pipes filling them both up first then clamp them off and reattach to the engine then refill the cooling system and remove the clamps.
it's more time consuming than difficult but it does work

finalzero 18 December 2007 12:58 PM

you missed an exclemation ! mark or two off your title ;)

[Davey] 18 December 2007 01:01 PM

Top up the reservior on the right, then run the engine with the lid of the header tank, give all the pipes a squeeze and keep it running until coolant is over flowing, put the lid back on.. Should sort it.

As above took mine to scooby clinic and it defo water rushing through the heater matrix i still get it in my 03 sti but defo nothing to worry about

:)

Alot of jap cars suffer from this.. Its the IMHO strange design they tend to use, the reservior is virtually "syphoned" so the system is totally sealed which makes it difficult to get rid of airlocks.

Not an Impreza but its the same principal
http://www.dohc.co.uk/temp/frontera/cooling_system.jpg

On most european cars the expansion tank is the reservior and air is released up into the expansion tank via a top hose on the rad.

As I said before I always find running the system with the rad/expansion cap off and squeezing all the pipes until the engine is hot and water is overflowing tends to fix the problem.
