As one of my front dampers has really seen better days, I have a decision to make about replacements. (on a MY96 UK turbo)

Do I go for standard MY96 dampers (already have a source for these), and keep the WRX springs I have, or do I push the boat out a bit and go for something a bit more exotic? I don't have that much cash to throw at the problem, so coilovers aren't an option.

The last time I asked this sort of question, I had just spent major money on the house, so the car had to survive how it was... and I couldn't take up the P1 suspension I was offered. :(

Hiya Mate,

I would recommend new standard struts and Eibach springs to anyone.. its great. I’ll bring the car round so you can see what it is like.

Let me know when.

The prices quoted by Buypartsby are considerably cheaper than that posted by GGR on their website as follows:
Replacement standard shock absorbers UK spec car only
GGS760 KYB front left shocker £73.22
GGS761 KYB front right shocker £73.22
GGS762 KYB rear left shocker £86.63
GGS763 KYB rear right shocker
£81.39

Are they the same stuff?

Jaay 27 October 2002 09:25 PM

Are the import/uk Sti shockers the same? I too have seen these Kybs and have fancied them and some Eibach springs anyone done this on their import ??

dnb 27 October 2002 11:52 PM

up to 97 UK and WRX were the same. I think the STIs were different (but I don't know how much...)

IOW_duder 28 October 2002 03:37 PM

Yeah.. Sti's had a harder ride. I guess diffrent spring rates.

just ordered my new dampers. Maybe I'll get some eibachs to go with them ;)

markwild 01 November 2002 09:32 PM

These prices seem amazingly good - As discussed with dnb, I might need to replace my shocks - taking a look tomorrow -

Subaru dealer has quoted me £160 EACH !!!

Does anyone know if 98MY are similar prices ?

If I'm going to replace them ,should I go for all round KYB + eibachs, as per your suggestions ? Will I notice much difference above the stock setup ?
Cheers, Mark

I got my front dampers on today. I run the car on MY96 WRX springs (have done for 6 months) and I have to say the improvement is impressive. The old dampers were well and truly knackered.

I suggest you talk to www.buypartsby.com and ask them about the shocks - not sure if there was a change in dampers in the MY98 and on. Subaru use KYB as OEM parts anyway, so it looks like the dealers are putting a lot of mark up on them.

I will get some pics up tomorrow I hope, as it got too dark to finish taking them tonight.

Ta, I'll send them a request for a quote. I may swap for your (dnb's) type of setup - seems to be a cheap(ish) mod with nice results - does anyone know if the eibachs make the car look OK with them making it lower (any probs with doing this fitment) ?

I took a look under the car today (wrt the clonk (see other thread!))....

Can't see much wrong with the Shocks or springs, but the ARB drop links seem to have some play in them. When I took one off, the lower bush pin could be moved about 3 mm either way within the rubber. This seems a bit much to me, as I was expecting it to be solid. I could also physically move it by pulling the ARB by hand.

Having never checked a new one, does anyone know if this needs replacing and can it be swapped for a powerflex one without any other mods (obviously both left and right being swapped ;) ) ?

Cheers,

Mark

I bought my car with Pi lowering springs (-35mm) on. It looked really great, but suffered on the nasty roads where I live and was murder with speedbumps. I wanted to replace them with eibachs, but I couldn't afford them at the time, so I got some WRX springs.

Eibachs are -20mm or less I think, so it should look good... (probably depends on the type...) and they complement the standard dampers well. (much better than the Pi springs I had) I haven't heard of many problems with eibachs.

WRT the droplinks, mine move about that much as well. They seem much loser than the back ones.

As an aside, when I took the top spring cups off my car, the LHS one had a burr round the hole in the middle, where it had obviously graunched itself on something  I think this may have had something to do with my problem. It's now sorted out, and I'll see what happens. Be careful aligning the top cups with the damper!!
