Is it just me that they annoy or are there others?

I thought "old" system of red or yellow was sufficient. I can see how many posts there are/have been & recognise what topic is hot & what is not.

I am with you here, How can a topic be hot if someone put "To the top" on a 6 month old thread that has had 15 replys 6 months ago.

Some time ago, I used to have the thread titles change colour when I've read them. This seems to have been switched off or something (I use IE5 & I haven't disabled the feature). I found it very useful as I could see at a glance which threads I was following.
