WRX, STI may be a better car but IMO the extra cost can not be justifed for the driving I do, there is only so much you can get out of a car on UK roads what with speed cameras etc.

I am asking coz am concidering buying. Saw an 02 sti for £23,000. Uk spec car with 3000 miles BUT I also went to the local dealer and he reconed I would be better with the WRX as I do 300-400 miles per week. He said that although the sti is quicker I would find the WRX more user friendly on a day to day basis.

Any views?

Agree obviously the STi is way better thats why it costs more. I would get a WRX or get yourself a new petrol head as you'll need it for your fuel bills. Anyway with the money you save in fuel and cost of the car you can spend it on mods for your WRX bringing it up to a good spec.

I think the reason why the dealer is edging you to a WRX is because STi's are damn difficult to get your hands on. As soon as they come in they're out again and it's a long waiting list. thats why i didn't get one anyway ;)

Pete:)

Hmmmm ok i still dont quite get this wrx v sti thing ;)
The only extra your going to be paying is that little more for the STi, the wrx is a flop, end of story so the dealers want to get rid of em, the STi isnt a flop ;)
As for running both on a daily basis, the only other running cost your going to have over the wrx is a little bit more in fuel, the STi is a much better car to live with daily, its got better brakes, a great gearbox compared to the wrx, suretrac diffs for better cornering, no nasty cluch judddddddder ;) and anyway its warrantied ;)
STi is the way to go :D just ask Dave T-S, hes had both and went from an MY00 turbo to an MY01 WRX to an MY02 STi type UK ;)

Chris

I hope you mean you'll take them out for a ride, not literally take them out :D

STI-7, wavering on PPP'ing it.

Is the STI worth the extra. I would have to say so. BUT you can achieve a car that will do pretty much what an STI will by buying a WRX and modifying it. You may lose your warranty to keep it under the same price as the STI, but it can be done.

If you wanted to go STI imitation route and still be warranty friendly then I guess you'd need the following
PPP(Almost same BHP as STI, same ish Torque) £1600
Brake Upgrade £1600
Suspension pack about £800

Total £4000

You'd still miss out on a 6 speed gearbox, the Vtec engine, LSD front and rear and you'd probably find your insurance would be higher.

In the end it comes down to personal choice. Drive both and see which you like best. Both are top cars(just the STI is a little more top :p )

Baby Blue 03 October 2002 04:09 PM

We have WRX but if we could have afforded it at the time an STi would have been on the shopping list.

UK STi7 for £23,000 - for a start, unlikely to be the prodrive version (don't know if that bothers you) and a demonstrator to boot!! be careful - you know how we all drive the demonstrator cars!

Had a WRX , now have a modded Sti. I dont do many miles, so the Sti is the choice for me. The WRX just wanst urgent enough for me, but is the better "distance" car, if thats what you need.

Baby Blue

I have seen the car and it is a ProDrive car. Its not at a Subaru Dealer so not a demonstrator. Its actually at a BMW dealer. So do you think it's a good buy at £23,000?

Just had a insurance quote from Tesco.

WRX - £593
STI - £803

Whats the difference in fuel consumption?

Chris L 03 October 2002 06:30 PM

Really depends on what you want.

I've got a WRX and it's a great all round car. Mine gets used for a regular commute as well as the odd blast or two. Full decat, Eibachs etc sort out the slightly sluggish feeling - mine pulls like a train. Anyone in the Harlow area on 12th October is welcome to come down to the Herts / Essex meet and I'll take them out :)

If I wasn't doing so many miles I would consider an STI (or an Evo VI ;) ) - great car and read the review of the PPP'd STI in Evo this month - blew them away - back to what a Scoob should truely be.

Pays your money and take your choice - although now I could be tempted to wait until next year for the revised WRX / STI.

Had a WRX (UK300) with PPP/Prodrive Springs/Quickshift/18"s and changed to STi.

Apart from the far better performance, the STi is also a better car for long journeys imho as the ride is better, the gearchange a lot slicker, and its quieter.

Cant really compare it against a Std WRX though as I havent driven one for any period of time.

robsta 03 October 2002 08:34 PM

STi 7

petrolhead 04 October 2002 08:37 AM

Cheers for the reply guys :)

gareth60 04 October 2002 11:04 AM

I have an Sti, but IMHO if you are doing 300-400 miles a week, the WRX would be a better bet in terms of fuel and ride quality.

Gareth.

petrolhead 04 October 2002 01:04 PM

Well, went for a test drive today. Nice!!! You can realy feel the front LSD working. gave it a bit hokey poker and nearly drove into a curb :( thats how well the LSD pull you round. Not as bone shaking as I would have thought. This one has the extra clocks in the middle of the dash, different exhaust and rear lights.

I feel unsure only because of running costs BUT for £23,000 seems good value.

Dave T-S 04 October 2002 01:36 PM

As Tony says, we went 2xMY00 to 2xMY01 to 2xSTi - and wouldn't go back. About to PPP mine too.

Ultimately, though, it's about what suits YOU best:)

J Bee 04 October 2002 01:40 PM

i'd go for wrx with PPP - cheaper to run/insure, etc. but still loads of grins

petrolhead 05 October 2002 01:45 PM

Well, just for your info. Deal did no work out.

Bloody dealer offered a pitance part ex for my car. Wanter £7300 + My car for the STI. My car 02 BMW Compact 320TI SE Diesel. This would put the value on my car as £15700. (Piss take) I paid £22500 6 months ago so not a viable propersition. Now if they had offerd 20 then they would have had a deal.

Just was not meant to be which is a shame as I rather liked the STI
