legitimetly (sp)/legaly BTW (ie no bribes required.

ive just dropped mine off at the MOT testing station, its getting done first thing tomorrow

car is UK MY98 full decat, but with the standard centre section (ie one cat) replaced obviously.

who's been and done this already and what result/s did you get?

ive heard of cars passing with just the centre cat, but who's actually done it?

cheers
chris

BTW Mods; could you keep this in here until tomorrow afternoon, as by then ill know for myself anyway ;)
cheers

achad 30 September 2002 07:11 PM

Yeah, should pass with ease. Have a look a couple of weeks back in General Tech. I posted my results there on my MY 98 with a full decat (FAILD, but only just realy) and then just a center cat, which it flu passed with ease. I would surgest using optimax (I understand it burnes more purely than other fules?) and a nicely warmed up cat.

good luck anywayz

Anthony

CHRIS_D 30 September 2002 07:21 PM

hmmmm......

done a search

just been reading past threads with reference to this subject....

.....seems to be 50/50 pass/fail

i guess each car is different whatever the exhaust system

<fingers crossed>
hope mine passes tomorrow
<fingers uncrossed>

BTW cheers anthony

Andy W 30 September 2002 07:25 PM

I believe that the centre cat is morfe effective if properly warmed up.

Andy

chiark 30 September 2002 07:44 PM

I'm going to be in the same boat as you in November. As Andy says, get it good and warm - boot it and get the exhaust nice'n'hot, as that's when cats are at their most efficient.

Good luck, and let us know :D

nick.

CHRIS_D 30 September 2002 07:47 PM

cheers nick

ill post the result tomorrow as soon as i find out

;)

What cat?;)

CHRIS_D 01 October 2002 09:15 AM

TOP....

..of the morning to ya :D

DanTheMan 01 October 2002 09:28 AM

I did but www.subaru4you.co.uk had welded two cats into the centre pipe which you borrow just for the MOT, and 1/2 an hour after I was fully decatted again :)
passed by miles so I expect one would have sufficed (STi5)

Chris - if you have a problem, Elmer has a dual cat centre section he doesn't mind lending out, although he is based in Totton so you might have a bit of a journey - although it might be easier than swapping the downpipe! :D

CHRIS_D 01 October 2002 09:32 AM

jen,

elmer is on standby <finger on the pulse>

i e-mailed him last night, If it fails im gonna go down there tonight and collect it. your right BTW its only 20 mins away + 1/2 hr, compared to 3 hrs for the DP

cheers
chris

iain atkins 01 October 2002 09:45 AM

Mine passed with just the centre, no problem acording to the tester. :):)

tinvek 01 October 2002 09:45 AM

logically one cat should be enough after all there are plenty of cars with bigger engines that just use one cat

chiark 01 October 2002 09:59 AM

Problem is that the scoob engine is "dirty" - it's getting a lot of power out of a relatively small engine. It hasn't been able to be sold in the US of A until the MY01 because of emissions, I believe...

Still, it looks like there's a good chance I'll pass with 1 cat. Excellent :D

AndrewC 02 October 2002 10:31 AM

My '98 passed it's second MOT yesterday with only the OEM center cat, they even offered to do the emissions test immediately after I arrived:D Although the car wasn't particularly hot when I got there.

With Oil temp @ 83C figures were:

Fast Idle : CO (<0.3) 0.24 ; HC (<200) 17 ; Lambda (0.97 - 1.03) 1.01
Natural Idle: CO (<0.5) 0.08

Andrew...

what would scooby do 02 October 2002 10:33 AM

my full decat passed - just take it to an "understanding" mot place.

"is all"

Jolly Green Monster 2 02 October 2002 11:09 AM

Did it pass then???

JGM :)

John Stevenson 02 October 2002 11:17 AM

I have two, they both pass easily with one cat (centre)

what would scooby do 02 October 2002 12:11 PM

JGM of course it passed, mainly due to the fact it was never tested

Hol 02 October 2002 12:28 PM

Mine passed with a remapped overfuelling Link and a borrowed catted Centre pipe. :)

Jolly Green Monster 2 02 October 2002 12:32 PM

Sorry what would scooby do,

my post was directed to CHRIS_D!

JGM :)

what would scooby do 02 October 2002 01:10 PM

yes, it did pass

i posted another thread in general, its probably in here now - havnt looked

i have the results but ive left them at work. of the top of my head:

idle=
Co2 = 0.5 % limit, i got 0.04 %
Lamda = .0970-1.030, i got 1.029 :eek:
Other one (cant remember what it is) = 220 something ppm, i got 24 ppm
fast idle=
Co2 = 0.4% limit, i got 0.03%

like i say these are of the top of my head i will edit this post with the correct details later

cheers
chris

One good thing about a Jap car you don't need cats because they never tested the reading so I think it's 92 emissions they test too.

oops! mist a B

DaveW 02 October 2002 11:32 PM

My MY99 passed on Monday with std BB and centre cat (I have a full 3" BPM so had to swap both), also std BOV fitted too.

Its been really weird driving around hearing birds sing, when normally I'm setting off car alarms :D

DaveW.

Jolly Green Monster 2 03 October 2002 09:33 AM

That is positive to hear that cars are passing with just centre..

I might have to change my down pipe now :)

Just didn't fancy refitting it once a year.

JGM :)
