I just got promotoed to external sales...
Loads more money.... Hooray !
BUT..........

They had a pop about the Scoob, right image blah blah blah.

I have to sell it, I negotiated the end of the year.

I am happy, but very sad also, I swear I'll cry when it goes.

I have a few ideas for a replacment but cant think about it yet, I bloody love that car.

Get a wagon and don't mod it - how much more restrained do you have to be? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

A MY01 is more understated & looks a tad more refined than the old shape - suggest that.

Steve Perriam 17 August 2001 06:40 PM

i'm surprised they think its an issue ?

to people in the know it would be a good conversation issue and might be good in sales orientated business ?

to those not into cars / rallying etc it might not even get a mention !

are they buying / contributing to the replacement ?

If its your personal car and they're not offering a company car I think they are being totally unreasonable.

This type of stuff gets right on my nerves I would hope my suppliers don't think that I am as shallow as to be persuaded one way or the other by the type of car that is driven.

It's a shame but wish you every success in your new job.

Puff The Magic Wagon! 17 August 2001 08:57 PM

Just on a rethink, I agree with Steve & Keo - why get rid of your car just to "conform"?

Bollox - its not the image - its the person and the interaction he/she has with the clients.

I turn up in leathers on a loud bike & that is me either that or with a burbling scoob with "Puff The Magic Wagon!" plastered in green over the windscreen ( http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif ). We have some of the biggest corporates in London as our clients and its the same for them as for the small ones. The proof is in the final delivery of the product and whether it does the job required to the standard required or beyond.

Its great about the promotion but is it (in real terms) worth it? What if you said you're keeping the scoob?

However, before you do anything rash, I have to say that I'm a bit of a maverick http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

With FIA flame suit, helmet, booties and gloves on, how about a B4 or GT-B? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Cheers.

TopCat 18 August 2001 04:02 PM

Andy Porter 19 August 2001 02:28 PM

Thanks for the replies guys.
I hear ya puff, but I do see their point
( I also already have a loud bike http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
They are giving me a healthy car allowance,
so its not all bad.
F knows what to get, IS 200 ?
Cheers,
Andyp

Steve Perriam 19 August 2001 02:57 PM

well if they giving u a decent enough allowance towards thats some consolation.

is200 is a nice car. if it had more power i'd have considered one.

how about the soon to be released IS300 ? dont know much about it but its going to have the 210bhp that Japan already get.

Andy

Don't know what industry you work in but I've had the Scoob for 18 months now visiting manufacturing co's all over the UK (yes, there are a few left!!!).

Often find it's a great conversation piece even breaking the ice with a few people who I'd never have imagined to be car buffs.

Perhap's your bosses are just jealous?!!!

if you love the scooby, keep it, dont become a corporate drone. let others drive bmw's http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
unless, deep down you fancy a change?
i dont understand the car being a big issue. most of my customers love to natter about my car parked outside, its a good conversation topic.
hope you do what YOU think is right http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
if you DO have to change, consider a 330, fabulous car. but it aint a scooby http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Andy Porter 20 August 2001 12:14 AM

Thanks guys.
For the record I do work in IT, ecommerce to be precise. I hear you, it not a stuffy sector, so a Scoob ' shouldn't ' be a big deal. But my boss's dont seem to agree.

Cheers for that link Daz, very nice bits http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

If I'm honest I dont want to put 15-20k on the Impreza a year. I have had an idea....

I'm considering leasing a second car, dont laugh, I'm toying with a VW Passat, 1.9 TDI.
I can get a good deal on new Passat, pay 1k ish, then about £200 a month. My car allowance will easily cover this, and I get 20p a mile from there on in, I may even earn a bit !
The only issue is 2 lots of insurance, tax, servicing, on top of having 2 bloody motor bikes also, MMMmmm, my mum may also boot me out http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

I'm still VERY undecided, and advice is gratefully received,
Andyp

Suggestions:

1) As you suggest yourself, keep the Scoob and run something else to eat up the motorway miles at your company's expense.

2) Trade in the Scoob for something with bosses' approval, then spend some of your "loads more money" on mods - superchargers and stiffer suspension spring to mind. They're not visible from the outside, so no image problem, but they might make it a bit more bearable.

3) A debadged M3? Or an RS4?

Andy.

Wrong image my AR$E!

One reason i got mine was so's not to follow the herd and get a BM or BM wannabe. I have nothing against BM's as such

I went to a meeting at a major London music label several months ago, pulled up in the car park surrounded by BIG mecrs, BM's and Porsches. As i enter i was greeted by several of the owners/people i had come to meet very interested in my car (in a nice way), helped break the ice!

Never had any problems with the car and image - IMHO it is a jealousy thing from people who would 'love' to have one but take the easy route, conform and follow the herd.

They'll be giving you a uniform and packing you to the barbers next.

DazW 20 August 2001 10:49 AM

Andy, found this on the TTE website - if you decide to go the IS200 route that is http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

blubell 20 August 2001 11:23 AM

Congrats on the promotion. Perhaps you could try a prodrive Legacy - I hear they are interesting http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

jasonleeds 20 August 2001 11:48 AM

image? I'm a technical director and run a scooby UK300...don't have a problem with the image thingy wotsit?

vmax 20 August 2001 12:07 PM

Andy,

It depends on what type of people are in your market. I'm an IT bod. If I saw you pull up in a scoob in my company car park we would hit it off like an house on fire.

If you are selling to the old dusty boys in the board room then you need a 7 series beemer.

DO NOT buy an IS200 after having a scoob. you will go mental. I had one for a while. Blinding comfy soft car with NO va va voom. If you change your driving style then fair enough go for it.

ian_sadler 20 August 2001 01:00 PM

Hi Andy,

I'm not in IT I sell TV cameras. Most the IT guys we use have either had or have scoobies. Its a great way to start a chat. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

I can understand not wanting to clock up to many miles in the car (I'm thinking of getting a Smart car for the work run http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif )but I use mine for business and as I said above it has opened 1000 times more than its closed (can't think of one that it has closed http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif )

If its just a case of wrong image then fight it.

Ian
