there was nothing in it.

my mate came over from donny to show me his new P1, so i asked him to take it for a thrash and i would follow him to see what the difference was, around the roads and dual carriage ways there was nothing in it, until we got to the motorway and he overtook me while i was going flat out at 150!

mines a turbo 2000 MY00 running 258hbp, his P1 is standard, even so i would have thought there would have been more in it?

chiark 26 September 2002 08:27 AM

If someone else is leading, you will normally see an open road and drop the hammer before they do if you're at the back... Dunno why, but it seems that way. My 'umble MY00 with downpipe and backbox did a good job of keeping up with a downpipe'd sti VII...

And I've driven that STI VII and know exactly how much faster it is (or feels)...

Remember these cars are 'kin fast in the first place, so it's not like you're comparing apples with oranges.

I know when I was following the STI I was really trying. However, the car in front has the responsibility for both of you in some ways, so they might back off?

Dunno. But try swapping around and see if you can shake 'im off :D

SimonH 26 September 2002 08:41 AM

Having just traded in my beloved 256Bhp (before I put the PPP ECU in!) MY00 turbo for a totally standard P1, I can say they are a world apart. Don't know why you got the results you got but the difference between the two is very noticeable when driving them yourself. :)

RB5320 26 September 2002 08:44 AM

perhaps you know your local roads better than your mate? also, while there is a difference in performance, it would not be enough for the P1 to clear off into the distance, and your only talking about 20-odd bhp difference. no doubt your mate was a bit gutted though!

Oakers 26 September 2002 09:30 AM

To be fair to your mate it does take a little while to get used to the P1. Try again in a couple of months, once he's got used to it.

P1Fanatic 26 September 2002 10:18 AM

Agree with oakers - if your mate only just got the car then hes gonna be a bit wary about taking it to the max.

LG John 26 September 2002 10:25 AM

Go easy lads, remember the P1 has a bigger, laggier turbo so will feel faster but peccy has a full decat if I remember correctly which will give useful gains. I've currently got part decat, ss bb, Tek3 and dawes at 1.2bar and I'm fairly confident my car would be there or there abouts with a P1. Suspect P1 might do some damage in fourth gear though, i.e. 80mph+

peccy 26 September 2002 10:54 AM

Oakers,

believe me he was used to it alright, took me out in it and didnt hold back at all, it did seem faster when i was in the passenger seat but i suppose thats always the case.

i was thinking about selling mine and putting some extra cash too and getting a P1, but realise now that the extra cash spent on my MY00 instead will result in a faster car IMHO.

ScoobyKev 26 September 2002 11:17 AM

Peccy.

I was in the same boat, was looking at a P1 and found there wasn't much in it. I'd rather spend a bit more on my car and make it faster than a P1. Plus the insurance for my GT4 is only £400 a year, where as the P1 is £1200 a year. Went to a garage that sell scoobies and they asked me why do I want a P1, why not go for a WRX STi. Why would you want a STi over a P1...?

Regards

Kev..

I'm not knocking the P1 as I think it has great handling/performance and looks very tasty.

Oakers 26 September 2002 12:07 PM

I agree with what you all say. Well sort off anyway :)
As for the lag on the P1's Turbo, if driven correctly it can be avoided completely.

And don't forget, the simple mods like de-cat downpipe and uprated backbox tends to put the P1 over 300BHP anyway. Well mine did ;)

I guess I am very defensive on my car, I have been in others but they just don't seem to give the same kick, 'specially that bug eyed one.:)

matt.bowey 26 September 2002 12:45 PM

mines a turbo 2000 MY00 running 258hbp - HOW? mines standard at the mo & will get modded soon............

chrisp 26 September 2002 12:55 PM

All UKs have 250bhp minimum and imports start at 320bhp :D ;).

Jonesy 26 September 2002 01:08 PM

If I'm understanding this correctly, you were racing your mate at 150mph on a public road.......very responsible.....and they wonder why the image of the scooby is going down hill

Molds 26 September 2002 01:16 PM

yeah cus jonesey is a saint

Jonesy 26 September 2002 01:18 PM

You're not wrong.

SimonH 26 September 2002 01:24 PM

I'll say it again folks; I had an MY00 with PPP, full decat, ITG, P1 intercooler, Eibachs, 17s, ALK, solid links, bumpsteer, uprated brakes and lots more bits of nonsense and I thought it was the bees knees.

My standard P1 (had it for precisely 6 days) is just such a nicer car to drive. Maybe I too am being defensive about my car but I think you guys are all concentrating too much on comparisons in "ScoobynetLand" where the roads are all 1/4 mile long and the speed limit is 160mph ;)

Back on planet Earth ;) where most of us live, for my daily commute is so much more enjoyable. Yes my old MY00 could almost definitely keep up with my P1 but in the P1 I can drive with one hand on the steering wheel, drinking my cup of coffee, listening to the stereo on 1/4 volume and have a converstion with my passenger. My modded MY00 was two hands on the wheel, cup coffee long since bounced out of the cup holder, stereo on full volume to hear over the noise of the exhaust and communication with the passenger only possible by text message!

I would never go back to my old MY00 now.

chrisp 26 September 2002 01:29 PM

Simon yep spot on yes you can mod upto the same power but it doesnt make it the same car. A car engineered to start with 280PS in my mind is better than a car with 215bhp and "tweaked" to 280PS.

Forgot to add but you are paying extra for the car ;).

Not having a go here Simon just trying to make a point:

I can't understand people that dis their old car as soon as they get a new one. Yes my scooby is faster and better than the VTS, but there are somethings the Saxo does better and I stil think its a great little car. I love my scooby but would happily have a P1 if I could afford it but I certainly wouldn't take the p1ss out my MY99. My car is perfectly comfortable and driveable - I've just spent the last hour on site and almost feel asleep at the wheel cause I got myself so comfy and relaxed. I just mozzied around and when the mood took me I put the foot down and made P1 like progress. I fail to see where the big differences would be?

peccy 26 September 2002 01:36 PM

matt.bowey, my only engine mod is a decat.

chrisp 26 September 2002 01:37 PM

Saxo yep I can go along with that. My 98UK was slower simlar weight and a lot less power but the UK was easier to drive and less agressive. I have to concentrate a lot harder driving the same roads at the same speeds.

peccy 26 September 2002 01:40 PM

sorry Jonesy, but they shouldnt give us 150mph cars if they dont want us to go 150mph :D

SimonH 26 September 2002 01:47 PM

SB - Each to their own really. :)
I fully appreciate the point you are making :)

The only point I was trying to make was that as a standard car the P1 is, for me, very nice and better than my modded MY00. I never had any intention of chopping in my MY00 - in fact I'm still getting mod bits through the post for it that I ordered for it last week! I drove the P1, liked it, bought it - simple as that. I'm not going to have to mod it to get what I want out of it, that's all.

It's quieter, smoother, revs longer and handles better (for me!!! - before all you psuedo-rally drivers out there get going  ). As chrisp says, it's a 280PS car not a modded 215 one. Does the job for me

LG John 26 September 2002 02:04 PM

That's a fair point. Now my car is the way it is I'd probably only make the change to a P1 if I could afford to mod the P1 as well. Standard for standard and modded for modded the P1 is always going to be better. I think the point of the original post though is that Peccy seems to have his car performing almost/as well as a P1. Now all he has to do is weld his back doors shut and nick some badges :D
