We have some servers running in our Brighton office which have VNC installed. Unfortunately, the IT admin in that office has changed the password and is off on holiday for this week without telling anyone what he's set it too :(

I could talk someone through changing the password, but that would mean giving them the password to unlock the server and I don't want to go around resetting the admin passwords.

Is it possible to find out what the password is via the registry?

have you got a network connection to the office ?
can you ping the target host ??

Yeah, I can ping the server and connect to the hidden shares (e.g. C$). I have the admin username/password, just don't have the VNC password to get a desktop.

I've tried stop and starting the services remotely, but I really need into the services applet on the server itself to see what dependencies the services rely upon.

Yep you can get to the password but it is in the registry and it is encrypted. Why not set up some crap level user and talk someone through logging in with that user - assuming you have domain control here - talk them through resetting the vnc password then delete the user.

Following all of that use a baseball bat on the sysadmin that 'forgot' to tell you...

Puff I have had a sh1te day with fecking servers but all fixed now.

Use Dameware to push the remote control service to the target machine, you just need admin privileges. I find it's invaluable. There's a try-before-you-buy version for download.

Well recommended.

(The utilities are pretty useful, but its the remote control part which is the most useful.)
