does the select monitor port still work if you take the ecu out?

I am guessing no, since it can read error codes which must be generated by the ecu.

Does anyone fancy building a system that works in parallel with any ecu and reads and interprets the voltages it sees in the standard chassis loom?

If you want to talk to the pectel then you would be better off using the stack dashboard protocol if supported or just using a computer..

I haven't looked at Pectel, but converting my monitor to work with the Link was a piece of pi55, I've actually also got round to adding thermocouple and wideband o2 inputs :-)

I'm not that bothered about a graphical display but for the Link unit I have used a bigger, nicer looking alphanumeric LCD.

Jon, I've had some success in getting through to the ECU, but don't have it down pat yet. Lack of time to test isn't helping unfortunately. Will keep you in loop as things develop.

Adam - as has already been said, if you remove the ECU, you remove the diagnostic info generator too.

While building a device to do what you suggest is certainly feasible, it's somewhat impractical/unnecessary and possibly even undesirable. Why go to all the trouble of building and integrating all that if the ECU is already doing it for you?

From a technical standpoint it's probably also better to "see what the ECU sees" than perform your own data acquisition. I'd be a bit worried about the potential for signals travelling to the ECU being altered, while the practicalities of adding all that wiring into the ECU loom, as well as calculating the various data items in real time without introducing any conversion errors compared with the ECU's own are a bit of a nightmare.

If your aim is to implement external monitoring of a non-OE ECU, the most practical method is still to implement a direct comm between the ECU and the display controller. Think most of the aftermarket products use CAN (Prodrive/GEMS stuff certainly does), so it shouldn't be too hard to get data from them.

I am certain there is a CAN bus on the pectel too, but only because i have heard others mention it.

Have no bloody idea about any of this kind of stuff.

Trouble is there arent enough pectel owners out there for peopel to bother building such a display device, which is a real shame.

Is there any likelihood of some of those features making it to the MY97/98 ECU version for us poor ones who can't afford to replace the "untuneable" brain? ;)

Paul - no problem with those features - just wire the sensors into the A to D bus on the micro & write some code to display them. I'm experimenting with Autometer oil temp and pressure senders for my pre97 in car display. (development is very slow, as I'm very time limited - even having to go into work on booked hoildays!! :()

I'm in BNE, previously in MEL. Just got my head around AVR, making PCBs, PWM (for my accerometer project!) etc. Currently making a select "sniffer" which looks at voltage level transitions between 0-12V and measures the pulse width.

Are you on AIM/Yahoo?

Hi there, I'm going to make the Scoobymonitor, got almost all the parts, but I'm wondering if someone can help me to get some code samples? I'm asking this because I'm living in Holland and want to display i.e. speed in KPH.

Maybe someone can help me get started with some code, I've read this article, read the ScoobyMonitor website. Found the japanese friendswebsite. Have made the Selectmonitor levelconverter, but now I'm stuck because I can't get VB or VC++ to use the commport at the right speed (baud 1953,8,O,1).

Can anyone help me out?

You can get Windows to run a custom baud rate using the SetCommState API function. Btw, you don't have to be exact - within 2% of the specified baud rate shouldn't give any errors. A standard RS232 port with a 115200 baud clock generator will be able to do 1952.5 baud, which is more than close enough.

I haven't built this interface or used this protocol so can't answer anything specific, but that is what you need to do in Windows.

although the kph on my car is actualy mph as its a converted wrx ;)

Is this still only available 'DIY' stylee, or does anyone actually knock them up on request? I like to think that I could give most things a try but this looks just too fiddly for me! Would really love one though... :D

@StickyMicky : I'm making the monitor with the bin file Andrew has on his website, and I was under the impression that is shows speed in MPH. So which software are you using? It is not just that I have a problem, but I want the build the Scoobymonitor like Andrew has designed, and then go futher, so that is also why I want to code the software myself.

To transmit from the uController, place 5V (or 0V -GND) on Tx and read from K line.

OBD line floats high - logic 0 - on K line, car will pull it low to
generate a signal - logic 1. Read from Rx (inverted logic - 5V logic 1 - 0V logic 0) created by pull up resistor.

Anyone got any general suggesions as to whether this is a good
approach.

Also, if I want to optoisolate this circuit (in both directions) is all that is required to add two opto's on both the Rx and Tx lines?

Finally i managed to put all parts together and program the MCU.
Since i have a pre97 Subaru (-92 Legacy) i have to write the code myself. I modified the Dumper.bas code with addresses from Kashima's site, with no success. All i get are zeros.

Has anyone managed to program the ScoobyMonitor for the pre97 ?
If so can you share your wisdom ?

Another question where should the Select Monitor ports connect ?
Is it to pin 14 and 15 on connector J1 or pin 15 and 16 if i'm using port D2 and D.3 ?
