Had a play with the strangest looking car I've seen in my life this morning. Said Renault Alpine on the back and it looked like a GT40 that met the 1980's sharp edge styling. It was very low and small with twin exit pipes. He was making some noise and puffing away suggesting he might have been trying but I'm not sure he was because I totally destroyed him...it was easier to beat than hot-hatches so I suspect he maybe couldn't be bothered with me.

Anyways, what the heck is the RA? What engine, power, stats, etc :) A picture would be nice if anyone has one.

Came across one in France at a sort of car/motorbike show, one Sunday. It said A110 on the back, and the guy who owned it said it had the Renault Gordini Turbo 1400 engine in. He reckoned it wasn't all that quick by today's standards, but in the 60's/70's it was their rally car. Certainly looked the part. When I find out how to do it, I'll post pics if anyone's interested.

what you want is the really old ones (70's), you sort of lay down in them to drive it.

have seen them at 24hrs of ypres rally (belguim) in the historic class.

they are the nicest to look at. i believe they have a straight six lump. sound great too.

anyone got a pic?

DJ Dunk 20 September 2002 10:44 AM

Mate at work had one, pretty quick in their day :)

The Zohan 20 September 2002 10:44 AM

Looked pretty cool when that model came out, doid a N/A v6 and a twin Turbo which was pretty rapid - think fibreglass body so not much weight.

The Alpines have been around since the early 60's Using Renault mechanicals, floorpans with a rather nifty body, some of the early one are really sexy looking cars.

NickAdams 20 September 2002 10:45 AM

It said A110 on the back
I think you might mean A610 and they didn't have a 1400cc engine in em.I think it was a 3 litre V6 turbo or something like that. Were pretty damned quick too - 155mph and 0-60 in around 6 seconds :)

Cheers

Nick

My old next door neighbour has an A610 Alpine, along with with Carrera 4 and some kind of Cobra thing in the garage. He chased me home one day, but I chickened out of doing a ton in a 30 limit...

Sideways 20 September 2002 10:48 AM

Beat me to it Nick the A610 was a limited run of the Alpine think they only sold about 20 of them really rare beast.

alcazar 20 September 2002 10:53 AM

Nick: no m8, this one was very small, two seats, and had A110 on the back I spoke to the guy who had restored it, and he defo said 1400 turbo.
I'm off to see if I can get the photo to download.

carl 20 September 2002 10:58 AM

alcazar -- looks very much like a Ferrari Dino, IIRC. Usually seen in white -- I think Pininfarina sold the same design to Ferrari and Renault

323GTR 20 September 2002 10:58 AM

The A110 is the old one sold in the 60s, not the car pictured on here. They were a reasonably succesful car in their racing class. They use Renault mechanicals, but I didn't think they did a turbo job?
After them came the A310s in the 70s. The A610 which is shown on here came in the late 80s. In the UK they are badged as Renault GTA due to copyrights on the Alpine name. There was an N/A V6 with around 160BHP plus a turbo with 210. The later ones then had 250. Not many were sold over here though.
If the one you raced looked like a GT40, it was most likely an A110, I guess the french equivelent to a Lotus Elan in the 60s.

LG John 20 September 2002 11:02 AM

Very similar to the pic but much smaller (not far of elise small) That picture is sort of like a bigger version of it. The one I saw had the same headlights but an even more wedge shaped nose and where the glass wraps round at the back the the one I saw was 80% metal work at the rear (blind spot city by the way). It also had one of those gay hard rubber spoilers with Renault Alpine embossed into it.

alcazar 20 September 2002 11:02 AM

323GTR: yes, it did look a bit like one, except with a hard top.
If I don't get off this site, I'll never get that photo done.

LG John 20 September 2002 11:12 AM

It was the A310 :) So what's that things stats??

carl 20 September 2002 11:26 AM

The Alpine A310 was the successor model of the Alpine A110. The A110 was quite well known as a winning 'Alpine-Blue Rally Flounder'; the A310 was never able to match this rally-image. However, the A310 had other qualities which one can appreciate by using it daily; it was quiet and comfortable, even though it was a 'low height' sports car. Retrospective, it may be considered as the most comfortable 'Every-Day' sports car of the 70's and 80's.

The first A310 four cylinder cars were put on the road in 1971. In 1976 the A310 V6 with the 2.7 litre PRV (a Peugeot, Renault, Volvo cooperation) engine was introduced. An other significant update happend in 1983, which included the wide-body GT version, also known as the "Group 4" (GT-4) body. In Japan it was called the "F-Pack", in Germany it received its designation as the "S".

alcazar 20 September 2002 11:46 AM

Yep, the A110 was defo "my" one.
The guy just laughed and shook his head when I asked him how it would do against my Scooby.

LG John 20 September 2002 12:10 PM

I don't think the one I played with was that fast. I was expecting to get gubbed but he seemed to half try and then give up. A sort of, 'why bother its a scooby' notion.

chrisp 20 September 2002 12:31 PM

A610 stats

250bhp

0-60 in 5.8

1/4 mile 14.7

So yes I guess he wasnt trying ;).

LG John 20 September 2002 01:33 PM

We've established it was the A310 though you muppet :p :D

chrisp 20 September 2002 01:50 PM

Are u sure its an A310 and not a later GTA the two look very similar ;)

scoobysnacks 20 September 2002 01:59 PM

Funny, I was watching an old TOP Gear Video just last night about Supercars. It had the A610 on it tested along with the Venturi. It was rated quite highly by old Clarky. I also remember it being tested against lots of other quick cars like the 300ZX, NSX, Porsche, etc in Performance Car about 10 years ago and it was rated very highly there as well.

carl 20 September 2002 01:59 PM

Porsche performance for less money, and it's a lot rarer too

LG John 20 September 2002 02:22 PM

Could this A310 or GTA or whatever it actually was wasted me if he'd wanted to??

323GTR 20 September 2002 02:57 PM

The A610 would probably give you a run for your money if it was the later 250BHP model (v rare). I doubt there would be much in it either way though. Waste is not the word I would use.
The engine is behind the rear wheels which means they are rapid off the line (like 911s) but the handling needs a bit of getting used to.
From what I know the A310s were only ever about 165BHP so no chance for one of those. Could be higher performance versions about though.

MarkCSC 20 September 2002 03:09 PM

You can get A310's pushing out about 200bhp

LG John 20 September 2002 03:35 PM

 165bhp is still respectable :) It was quite a nice looking car but not really to my tastes, certainly would turn heads (rarity more than anything I think)

GM 20 September 2002 06:59 PM

I really, really, really want an A110.............

LG John 20 September 2002 07:04 PM

Why?
