I think you mean this Cygwin

David_Wallis 18 September 2002 03:24 PM

no, I didnt :D

I was offering si an alternative to dual booting... which will let him run a full os in its own window, either with or without network connectivity and even its own mac addr.

I didn't think you meant it, I thought that's what Si was after, however it's not substitute for a full OS, which he could do in VMware (and I myself have used often). For practicing a few shell commands VMWare is overkill, a small disk and installing on that would be cheaper.

David_Wallis 18 September 2002 03:36 PM

ill let you off then :D

Yeah but if I hear another dual boot question...

David

Andrewza 18 September 2002 04:07 PM

No, wait, I was wrong, disks are bad, get VMWare and backup the disk image for when you break the OS

chockymonster 18 September 2002 05:12 PM

Dave,

so how about a dual boot and a how do I get my new soopa fast grapics card working in linux question ;)

dsmith 18 September 2002 05:20 PM

Should I use software raid to make Vmware quicker ? ;)

Andrewza 18 September 2002 05:24 PM

I dunno, my brain feel like degraded RAID 5 right now, buuuuuuuuh....

I found VMWare sooooooooo slow, I was running it on an 1GHz Athlon with 1/2 gig of RAM, I just gave up and made a partition for Linux and a boot disk and its much better.

Get a copy of Services for Unix (MS product). This gives you a couple of command line shells to play with.

Cheers
