Villa boss Graham Taylor has championed the cause of three former B6 goalkeepers as current number one Peter Enckelman prepares for life in the Premiership spotlight.
Taylor insists that Enckelman can only have derived positive aspects from the high-profile trio under whom the Finn learnt much of his craft. Mark Bosnich, David James and Peter Schmeichel all played significant roles in the tutorship of Enckelman, who is now ready to stand on his own two feet as Villa’s first choice between the sticks.
Enckelman’s Villa Park career as top custodian got off to a flyer on Saturday: the 25-year-old saving his side from almost certain InterToto Cup elimination on more than one occasion. Swiss side FC Zurich maintained their dangerous edge from the first leg clash but were met with defiance from Enckleman in the Villa goal.
The Finn will now look to take his impressive pre-season form into both the semi-finals of the InterToto and the early stages of the Premiership season. Villa travel to Lille in northern France tomorrow evening for the first leg of the former, before lifting the curtain on their Premiership campaign on August 18th with the visit of expected high-flyers Liverpool.
