Just trying to find out if there is any legal maximum weight a person is allowed to lift. I thought it was about 20 kilos, but not sure.

Thanks in advance.

Clare - I beleive it's all about where you lift from i.e. lifting from the ground is less than the waist level...I'll attempt to dig out the figures fromt he pile of paper/leaflets that is my desk unless someone comes up with the answer in the next five minutes :)

Clarebabes,

If I remember correctly from H+S lectures at work,I think the maximum you can lift on your own is 45kgs. Don't take it as gospel though.

Craig.:D

CHRIS_D 16 September 2002 06:53 PM

AFAIK it's 25 kg

hence why bags of cement are now in 25 kg bags rather than 50 kg as it used to be

Im CITB H&S, but dont quote me though, its off the top of my head.

Pfht, women are all for equality, until they get it better than us, bet the HSE dont get many complaints about women having to lift less!

Rex93 16 September 2002 07:24 PM

weight limits are only a guidline, and are not necessarily your limits.

The bags of cement as mentioned above were reduced to 25kg as this is considered to be a comfortable weight for moving(not lifting single handidly).

It is your judgement that plays a part in how heavy something is, if you feel an item is to heavy for you, then it is your responsability to get help to lift it, or to get someone else to lift it.

Health and Safety produce "guidelines" not "rules" to cover every employer and employee, not single individuals as everyone is different.

I think the women's weight may be something to do with us being less physically strong as men. I know this is probably an eye opener for some people, but I'm afraid it's true in most cases.

And p.s. thanks for all the info guys :D

I think its 25-30 kgs, but it is only a guideline. Basically one person should only lift what they feel thay can comfortably and safely lift. If in doubt, ask for assistance as everyone is different. Its not worth the risk hurting your back. Lift with your legs, keeping your back straight.
Parcelforce wont ship anything over 30kgs, as it would require 2 people. What sort of parcel courier are they, is it any wonder they are losing money, turning away custom?? its not as if they dont have enough staff..
A bag of cement may be 25kgs, but bags of sand is still 50kgs. Try carrying a few of them up 3 or 4 flights of stairs!!!
