I've heard Shell are replacing their SUL with Shell Advance. The octane level is to be 98 ron rather than 97. Has anybody else heard about this ?

babber 03 August 2001 05:42 PM

I'd stay away from shell petrol. Remember the drama a few years ago with shell and cavaliers.

Cheers Phill

Blue,

Saw a press release a few weeks back about Shell Optima, which I believe is a 98RON fuel. Something in the blurb about "120 stations at first"

Cheers

That would be cool, even worth going into europe if our petrol would come in line with price and octane. dont tell me shell is crap? i use it in my scoob, and doing 28,000 miles a year the air miles are a great bonus! 7 pound george vouchers with asda petrol does not have the same appeal! Lee

The impression I get from posts on the BBS is that Shell is one of the most popular fuels with BBS members along with Esso, BP and Texaco - I have never read anything negative about any of these before. Nevertheless I am intrigued about the Shell and Cavaliers story - please tell!!

MY00 - Shell SUL since the day it left the showroom http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif.

RB5SCOTT 05 August 2001 11:05 AM

Does that mean Shell will charge about 90p a litre for this as they are already the dearest for SUL

Scott

Still buy it though http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

It was the roundheads i tell you! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

It's about a fuel Shell launched about 10 years ago that turned out to screw up vauxhall OHC engines. They withdrew it, only after 1000's of cars were damaged though!

Shell have been selling "Optimax" in Australia for about a year. It is a 98RON fuel and until very recently the only unleaded fuel around with a RON rating over 95.

Although I detest the idea of dealing with a company as morally bankrupt as Shell, I have been using it since it's release and won't put anything else in my tank. It is simply the best fuel available in Australia right now.

Having said that, oil analysis shows that this fuel shortens the service life of your engine oil (causes it to break down faster). The benefits outweigh the shorter change intervals though.

There were a few cases during their test phase where a few engines went bang because of contaminated fuel. I am familiar with the people involved and they are still trying to get Shell to take responsibility.

Otis, thought you had emigrated. Happy New Year mate.

MY00 also run since new on Shell SUL, (yes it used to be 98 RON). 300 miles to the tankful. No problems.

I use esso religiously.

I remember most bad tanks of super being from shell stations and so have avoided it since!

For pricing, I hope everyon is staying in touch with ispypetrol.com it is great.

BarryK 07 August 2001 12:45 AM

No, no,no. Loads of BP stations still say 98 RON on the pumps, but it's not.

Andy Winskill 07 August 2001 06:12 AM

Got 98RON SUL at BP on A11 yesterday....

I'd heard that the new Shell petrol was 99RON....

Neil F 07 August 2001 01:14 PM

I think this is a fackin liberty.

They degrade SUL to 97RON claiming that "octane is so hard to get these days" (official quote from petrol company).
Now they're putting it back up to 'their previous'/'current European' standard do you think they'll charge extra?
I think we all know the answer to that one......

Neil.

Won't use Shell cos they take the p*** on their prices e.g.
NUL 76.9 SUL 86.9 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif how can they justify an extra 10ppl http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif

Esso down the road NUL 76.9 SUL 78.9! 2p difference. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif Everytime I go past Shell I'm tempted to go in and have a go at the Mgr. However, most of these places are full of folks that don't know their SUL from their NUL. When I told the lady in Esso why I thought they were gods gift to Subaru drivers she just looked at me blankly. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif

Andy Winskill 07 August 2001 08:24 PM

Now I hope other people get p!ssed by this.

Pulled into a Shell garage with a single car (a Micra) on the forecourt. 6 double sided pumps. 1 SUL pump. 1 side out of action. Guess where the Micra driver is....

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

The woman looked at me as if I was stupid....

Mind you I did pull up behind a Rover 214 filling up with SUL..... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif

chelsie_uk 08 August 2001 08:21 PM

guys

what's going on here, don't you all remember the foul strike not that long ago.
It was for our benefit so we didn't have to pay silly big prices for our fuel,
well what I'm asking is, we all have SUL
so why do we want this new one that is going to cost us more, the saying goes
DON'T FIX WHAT'S NOT BROKEN
unless you drive fast for a living then what's the point, don't you all get where your going at a nice speed all ready?
I'm just wondering that's all just like to read your minds.
