hi again, fitted the HKS hiper centre+BB last nite!!! WOW! I love it, I had a little blowing between the standard DP and the HKS, I am using a new gasket 1.5mm approx... how tight can i tighten the spring bolts? is it safe to fully compress the springs?
Cheers |
Don't tighten these all the way otherwise you'll defeat the point of the springs - they should allow the exhaust system to flex. The torque on these springs on an MY01 is 18 Nm (about 13 lbft), I guess it will be the same on the classic shape.

thx Duncan i will check it again :)

on the instructions for my Magnex centre, it said leave 10 mm 'play' in the springs. I assumed that meant 10 mm compression.

fivepint,
Where did you get the new gasket as i think i need one..??? Dan |
When I fitted my exhaust I left the springs out and used the new bolts which came with the HKS Hyper.
should I put the springs back?? Sorry for hijacking your thread. |
When I had my DP fitted by Scoobysport they never fitted the springs.
So I hope there not spose to be used ! |
the hiper has a flex joint in it as well... so wouldnt worry too much about leaving loads of play in the springs..

hmm now im confused, my hiper is going onto the standard DP, ive used the spring bolts, but there is some blowing, i used a standard oval exhaust gasket instead of the "ring" that was on the standard system (the hks didnt seem to fit with this?!?!) i got the gasket from a local (irish) impreza specialist, would some sort of liquid gasket help?
thx for the responses so far :) Cheers |
Hmmm, the spring bolts are designed to be used with the "doughnut" style gasket. If you new exhaust doesn't have the recess to hold the "doughnut" gasket and you are forced to use a standard plate gasket, then don't bother with the springs on the bolts. The springs are part of the design of the flexible joint that relies on the "doughnut" to seal it.
Strangely the design of the MY01+ Scoobysport exhaust uses the "doughnut" .... Hope that helps. Duncan PS. Exhaust paste can be effective, just give it time to harden before taking the car for a thrash. |
If you use the olive joint (flexible joint) then the bolts should have a lip on them. You then tighten them as much as they can go, which leaves the correct spring length.

I have a Hiper and a scoobysport downpipe on my WRX. If I wanted to take the Hiper off and refit the std centre and backbox, would I need spring bolts ? The car is M Reg, just has straight nuts and bolts on the gasket.
Also, what would be the deal with the gasket ? Would I reuse the current one, do I need another type or is it not needed cos of the donut thing ? Thanks Ken |
thx bug eye, thats makes more sense, i will try gasket sans springs ;)
cheers ps: should i worry about less flexibility in the joint?!? [Edited by fivepint - 9/11/2002 1:26:43 PM] |
