Well, our old washing machine has lasted 12 years and doesn't have much sign of build up of scale on the element. But out kettle furs up quite quickly.

So, I think it is tosh, IMHO of course.

Use Citric Acid to get rid of build up. (From the local chemist)

USe it on a boil wash

Calgon is more a preventative measure

Been advised by a washing machine rapair man just to use 50ml of vinegar on a 90 deg C wash (and to put fabric conditioner in like you'd do normally......as it'll stop it smelling after) as it does the same thing at a fraction of the cost. I do this once every few months and it does come up like a new pin!
